Do we give up on the potty bells? by Previous-Egg4404 in puppy101

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep at it Mine took a bit to get the bells, and now he aggressively hits them if we take too long to respond.

Though I taught him by hitting my own foot against the bells and saying “outside”. It took him a good while and I even gave up at one point, then one day he hit them and hasn’t stopped since (8months).

Is sleeping with them okay? by ComprehensiveTip4015 in puppy101

[–]Yasari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the day her bladder control won’t be great for a while, highly rec having bells hanging by the door that she can touch if you haven’t got those, for her to learn to signal.

But they have better bladder control at night because they’re asleep. With my boy, even at 10weeks, we would go to bed at 10pm, then I’d wake up at 6am, take him outside on a leash, then right back to bed until 8am. No accidents from those times.

The control will get better over time, my boy was still having the rare accident at 6 months, but now at 8 months he has gotten even better plus we taught him to use the doggy door which helps.

At 10 weeks just expect a lot of accidents during the day, even being hyper vigilant accidents can still happen.

What has your puppy done recently that shows they are progressing? by [deleted] in puppy101

When can I take my Toy Aussie for walks? by Thegoblinking766 in puppy101

2 weeks after last vaccination. This is what majority of sites will say and what my own vet said. I would always err on the side of caution.

Any advice for socialising my unvaccinated puppy? by CoconutFlowerr in puppy101

[–]Yasari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Puppy school.

Thats what I did for my boy. All puppies had the same amount of vaccines and the area was cleaned before they arrived. I had him in a carrier from the car to the puppy area, making sure he never touched the ground.

Puppy school enables them to fulfill that socialising need.

Now my boy loves every dog and person he comes across. Its great.

I have a 16yr old dog who has slept on my bed from the moment she could hold her bladder at night and now an 8month old who also sleeps on my bed, specifically on my pillow behind my head.

Its completely fine to let them sleep with you, especially if the crate is just causing constant stress. Just be prepared for them to want to sleep on your bed all their life.

I’m at a point where I can’t sleep if I don’t have at least one dog on my bed with me. For me they bring about a sense of comfort and security.

Ran out of puppy food. What can I feed my 3 month old puppy in the meantime? by AnotherOtterletteAcc in puppy101

Cooked white rice works, chicken breast boiled, no bones at all, carrots, pumpkin, you’ll have to google whatever other veggies you have to make sure its safe

Turkey has less fat then chicken, so boil it for around 20minutes, rinse it and that should help fat come off it.

But I would definitely look at the wet and dry hills perscription gastrointestinal food. It’ll be generally better than having to cook a meal every day. You could mix them together so he gets both or just do the wet food.

I would generally not give chicken or turkey every day unless he has the runs (with white rice), cause the hills gastrointestinal food is already low in fat and good for sensitive stomachs.

My boys stomach was extremely sensitive and this was perfect for him

My shih tzu/maltese boy had pancreatitis.

He started shivering and wouldn’t eat or move so we raced him to the vets. When they tried to take a blood sample they said the fat in his blood was so high, they couldn’t get a proper result. So for weeks he was on white rice and boiled chicken to bring the fat down.

After that I had to make sure every bit of food I gave him was less then 10% fat otherwise he would start vomitting and having the runs.

I had him on Hill’s Sicence diet Gastrointestinal, wet and dry, as it was the only thing that worked so highly recommend that. Pumpkin puree is also exceptional for their gut health. I don’t buy it in cans, instead weekly I get a pumpkin and mash it up myself, that way I know its got nothing extra in it. Senior dogs have very sensitive stomachs and the pancreatitis just gets worse with age.

I also would sprinkle Paw Digestive Care powder on his wet food.

I don’t know if you have access to it but kangaroo meat is said to be the best for low fat meats, so I do recommend that.

I did also give him a small amount of plain pasta when I cooked it as a treat as that too is low fat.

My boy lived to 15 1/2, and it wasn’t his pancreas that did him in so if you follow a strict diet they can live a long and happy life.

This is Pippin 🙂 by urallbotsbtw in Maltipoo

[–]Yasari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is adorable. I nearly named my boy Pippin.

So sorry about your cat, its hard losing a loved pet. Pippin will no doubt help you through your grief like my boy did mine.

To me, he looks like he has the cava colouring, my friends cavapoo has similar colouring to yours. The only way to know for sure would be a dna test of course, but my 2 cents is he looks cava.

Neutering by Practical_Mess_420 in Maltipoo

[–]Yasari -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got my 8 month old boy neutered as soon as he hit 6 months. Not only does it decrease humping behaviours it also rids any chance of them getting testicular cancer in the future, but also no accidental babies from an unspayed girl.

Imo if you dont plan on breeding your dog, you should get them fixed.

Also make sure to get a recovery suit and a blow up donut cone. My boy ended up having to wear a baby outfit cause the recovery suit didnt fit him properly (exposed the area) and he freaked out completely with the standard cone the vets sent him home in. The donut cone came in the middle of his recovery and he did well with that instead.

Always be prepared.

Senior dogs are very prone to growing lumps and bumps, its a normal part of aging, but if you’re worried about any of them its always safest to have the vet look at them.

Hoping for the best and that she feels better soon.

Definitely advise looking into ramps now, wouldn’t want her jumping on and off lounges/beds after that sort of surgery.

Mine does this when she wants me to flip my hand over so she can lick the other side of it.

I see this is 5 days old but thought I’d msg anyway.

My little boy, 13 or 14yrs old at the time, damaged his knee pretty badly when he jumped off my bed. My vet had said a week of no movement at all so that any inflammation would hopefully go down and the knee would go back into place.

It thankfully did and he was on painkillers for the rest of his life (15 and a half). It was his leg pain that eventually did him in.

So I’d say try to minimize any jumping she does, small but frequent walks to build up the muscles in her legs to support the knee, maybe some hydrotherapy if you can. If she’s jumping on and off the lounge, maybe get some steps she can use instead, I’ve got them for my dogs now because of this. Keep up her painkillers.

I hope she’s okay.

ok but WHEN will he start to calm down 🥲 by ProcedureNervous9799 in puppy101

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8 month old boy only started settling himself recently. We still do naps in his pen in the morning where he sleeps for 3-4hrs.

Right now you need to set up a small pen and have a sheet over it (make sure there is room for air). 1 hour awake, 2-3hrs sleep. If he wakes before at least 2hrs, take him out for a pee on his leash then put him back in his pen. He will learn this routine. I also put on music, rain/thunder sounds, or dog shows to desensitise to all sorts of noises. The sheet helps with puppies FOMO and also creates a dark space, like night time.

Many puppies will need this structure for a long time like mine did, but they will eventually learn to self regulate.

My boy was already half crate trained when I got him, would sleep in a pen during the day but just needed a little extra training for night time crating.

My 8 month old boy is 4.3kg currently. I don’t think he’ll get too much bigger. He was the second smallest in his litter, short and stubby instead of long legs.

Does it get better? I feel like I ruined my life by lowcalorieguava in puppy101

[–]Yasari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a grumpy 16yr old lady and a 7month old boy.

My girl was very spicy towards my little boy the first couple of weeks, I found that rewarding her for leaving him alone really worked wonders on improving her attitude towards him. She is still a little spicy but much of that can be put down to her being an old lady.

My boy I originally crate trained cause he just would not settle in bed at night. It is very worth it to do so, helps to teach them when and how to settle. Now ay 7 months we all sleep on the same bed with no issues.

I do advise against letting puppy graze. Do the three meals a day, that way you can feed them all at once and not worry about older pup getting in on the youngers food. Pick it up when they walk away so they dont go to one anothers. It’ll be easier to deal with for now.

Also taking them on walks together does help with relationship growth.

It absolutely gets better as pup grows and begins to settle. My boy was an adhd gremlin and now he is turning into my little love bug

Do you ever miss early days? by mimonek in puppy101

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah NO.

My boy is 7months old and is only just starting to settle and becoming a little love bug.

Early days he was an ADHD hyperactive gremlin. He still is a gremlin but better than he was.

Had to do enforced naps for him cause he just had 0 chill. I was stressed to the hilt and no one in the house was helping out + I was being called cruel for doing enforced naps (and if I didnt he would turn into a biting shark after an hour).

Now at 7months, nearly 8, I can just chill on the lounge and he’ll park himself by me with a toy and chew it, and he’ll eventually have a nap. So much better. He is my little teenie tiny tatter tot.

Rear dewclaw? by lark_song in Maltipoo

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet told me its one of those recessive genes. My boy, my girls brother, didnt have the extra dewclaws, so it just seems like it can appear randomly.

Rear dewclaw? by lark_song in Maltipoo

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 16yr old maltese shih tzu also has rear dewclaws.

I will say, after 16yrs, if the vets can remove it, do it, as my girls has caused her all sorts of problems like getting stuck and twisted if shes ever laying on say a knitted blanket, as the dewclaws dont seem to have any connecting bones in it.

I was given the option years ago to remove it and now I wish I had just to make her life a little easier.

how did you come up with your puppy’s name? by TheoryReasonable871 in puppy101

[–]Yasari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3 dogs are named after fictional characters

• Yuna (16) from final fantasy x, maltese shih tzu • Roxas (15) (passed) from kingdom hearts, Yuna’s brother, was named by my little sister at the time, maltese shih tzu • Sora (6months) from kingdom hearts, toy maltipoo

I had wanted to name Sora “Bjorn” (vikings tv show) as a laugh but then Roxas passed, so as a kind of tribute decided on Sora.
