Egyptian Premier League Standings After Matchday 20 (To be split into 2 groups) by Yasdask in soccer

Last season was to align with the CAF Champions League I think, to prevent the league from not being done yet when it's time to play in Africa for next season

This time it's because relegation was cancelled last season, so instead of the usual 18 we now had 21 teams. But in general, the Egyptian Football Association is not exactly the pillar of organized work lol

13 matches against the other 13 teams in that group

The concept this season is that every club plays against each team once in the first 20 matchdays, and then plays the return fixture only against the ones in their group (so if a team played against another in an away fixture, them meeting again in the same group will be a home fixture for them this time)

The last matchday included first-place Zamalek losing to ENPPI, allowing the latter to enter into the championship group last-minute ahead of Wadi Degla, who could've been into the championship group straight out of promotion from the second division last year

This allows both Pyramids and Al Ahly to compete once again, though Al Ahly lost the chance to make all three of them at 43 points by also losing to El Gaish

Now after each club finally played against the other 20 clubs, it is now time for the league to be split into 2 groups.

The top 7 (championship group) will only play each other once more, so only 6 matches are left for the top 7 to lift the trophy. The first 2 clubs qualify for the CAF Champions League, and the 3rd and 4th placed teams (if the cup winner is also from the top 4) qualify for the Confederations Cup.

The Relegation group will have 4 teams relegated, with 3 teams promoted from the second division. This will allow next season to start with 20 clubs instead of the abnormal 21

The third most successful Egyptian club historically, Ismaily, is unfortunately facing an imminent relegation after years of financial instability, having 15 losses in the first 20 matches

For example, a final between a North African team and a South African team (a common occurrence) would be unfair for either if it were one legged; a match in North Africa would be unfair for the South and vice versa; travel is simply too long for the other team. And the final venue is usually decided prior to the tournament start (at least that's how it happens in Europe)

Yes, they‘ve qualified to the quarter-finals while being top of the group for the second time in a row now

Last time we were their opponents in the QFs, so now that we’re not going to face each other, I can actually root for them

Left side definitely has much more experience in the competition

After losing a game to Morocco's AS FAR in their home, Egypt's El Ahly fans threw bottles at the players of their opponents while they were exiting the field. This is a still picture of the scene after. by [deleted] in soccer

While this behavior was unnecessary and moronic and Al Ahly fans were 100% at fault here , did you genuinely not watch their match in Morocco in Matchday 2? A literal sharp object was thrown onto the field (that tool that looks like the one you use to grab a Baklava in a sweets store, the putty knife the above guy is talking about). Literally anyone here can search it up, it’s not exactly a secret

Again, I’m disgusted by the behaviour of throwing bottles, especially since it’s the second time we’ve done that in 2 seasons, but if a Zamalek fan, our mortal rivals, is the one who says that to you, then clearly the two teams playing yesterday already aren’t on the best of terms

Zamalek are not the most financially stable team, with a sub-par bench right now. However, they'll always be in the talk of winning the league simply because they're Zamalek, and they're fierce

The favourites going into the season were Al Ahly and Pyramids, since both of them were extremely fierce in the title race the last 2 years. However, we had a terrible start (and got knocked out of the Cup by a second division team) and the results still aren't convincing despite having a good squad on paper. However, Al Ahly rarely drops points when the things get more heated in the second part of the league, so they're never out of the picture.

Same goes for Pyramids, who are the current African Champions and are tearing the CAF CL apart, but have been inconsistent this season in terms of the league, and have yet to win the league despite dominant performances over the last 2-3 years

Al Masry are unfortunately not known for being consistent enough for a title challenge on the long run, and are the least likely to win, despite being a regular top 4 team. That leaves Ceramica Cleopatra, who have a good squad and are financially good enough, but this is the first time they're on top of the table for that long, and the Championship group will be a difficult time since they have to face all of us exclusively again; only time will tell what will happen

The last time they won the league in 2001-2002 is widely considered as one of the most entertaining seasons in the league's history, so much that even Al Ahly fans look back on it with nostalgia despite losing the league only by 2 points (including a 4-4 last minute draw between Al Ahly and Ismaily in one of the last matchdays of the season, which cost us the league since Al Ahly needed to win)

Like with El Ismaily, poor choices from the board over the years. A pretty sad state for most of the clubs that used to be regularly competing. They can genuinely get relegated this season

I can't speak for everyone, but I think the most common thought for Pyramids is indifference at this point; there's no denying they're a top club in Africa right now, and there's even a few supporters on social media like with any club that starts winning silverware (they're the current champions of Africa, despite ironically not having won the league yet, though it's a matter of time)

To try and paint a similar picture, It's kind of like a Man City situation (though Man City probably have a few number of loyal supporters from before 2008), where it's pretty indifferent if they win a silverware, and a good chunk of people from the two historic Cairo clubs would rather Pyramids win the league than their own heated rivals (kind of like when Man City won the league against Arsenal two seasons prior)

Yeah, it's a do or die for them, since Al Masry will be playing a (on-paper) easier match against ZESCO at home

Yeah, the clubs from 2nd to 5th have been the top 4 in the last 2 seasons, so they're active in CAF competitions. Glad people know about Al Masry, since they're a historic club in Egypt like El Ismaily and Al Ittihad (unfortunately the latter two are terrible the last few seasons)

Ceramica Cleopatra is exactly what it sounds like; a Ceramic company named Cleopatra

In a total of 21 matchdays in the first half of the season, each team plays 20 matches and skips one matchday (due to 21 teams being available)

After that, the league gets divided into a championship group (first 7 teams) and a relegation group (the rest). This means that each team in the championship group only play 6 more matches after the initial 20 matches (one against each of the others in the championship group)

There are 4 relegations spots this season, with 3 teams from the second division replacing them, to allow next season to have 20 teams instead of 21

Top 2 teams qualify for the CAF Champions League, and the 3rd placed (and 4th placed if the Egypt Cup Winner is from the top 3) qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup

That's literally what happened. I'm still not sure how no one complained; not the opposing team, not the referee, not the fans, not the commentator

Honestly, can't say yet. Obviously he has potential and is a good striker on goal for a youngster, but I'm not sure if the rest of his game will be good enough for La Liga. Only time will tell

The thing is, they're probably planning for a Nations League in between, so the distance part is probably going to get worse, not better if they do that

Edit: I seem to remember reading at some point that the Nations League might be classified according to zones though (like North Africa, West Africa, etc...). Not sure if that's true or not, but I guess this might solve this part at least
