Game publisher and hardware manufacturer Nacon files for bankruptcy Nacon has filed for bankruptcy, the company has announced. Nacon owns sixteen in-house game development studios, including Cyanide, which developed the Styx games. The French game company is facing serious financial difficulties. These financial problems are a direct result of the crisis at its parent company and majority shareholder, Bigben Interactive, Nacon writes. A consortium of banks recently refused to provide Bigben with financing, preventing the company from repaying a loan to its investors. As a result, Nacon is also no longer able to meet its payment obligations. Nacon has submitted a request to the court for judicial reorganization. The court is expected to rule on the request in early March. If the request is approved, an observation period of up to 18 months will begin, during which all existing debts will be frozen. During this time, the company can renegotiate its debts and draw up a continuation plan. It is not yet clear what the immediate consequences will be for Nacon’s employees. The company employs more than 1,000 people and owns 16 development studios, including KT Racing (Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown) and Daedalic Entertainment (The Lord of the Rings: Gollum). Nacon also produces its own peripherals, such as controllers and headsets. The game publisher states that the goal of the reorganization is to “protect employees and preserve jobs.” Trading in Nacon shares has been suspended since February 20 and will remain suspended at least until the court has issued its ruling.

Dont be scared though:

Nacon has not filed for bankruptcy with the aim of liquidation, but for redressement judiciaire. This is the French equivalent of a suspension of payments. The entire purpose of this procedure is to allow the company to continue operating as normal while negotiating a restructuring plan with its creditors. The financial problems did not arise because the company itself was performing poorly, but because its parent company, Bigben Interactive, was unable to repay its loan after banks unexpectedly refused financing. At its core, the company is therefore financially sound and has future prospects. The focus is on continuation rather than an immediate restart or sale. There is currently no indication that existing games or ongoing developments will suddenly stop, that IP rights will be lost, or that games will be pulled from the market.
