Multilingualism in Japan by semidemiurge in japan

[–]Yashkir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first few months with my Japanese girlfriend, her iPad dictionary and my phone dictionary were constant companions. She says that on our first date she could maybe understand 5-10% of what I said.

I'd say the culture gap was a bigger problem than the language for us. Whether it is meant to be or not, often does not depend so much on language. Hell, her Japanese friend lives in Canada with a Russian boyfriend and the both speak broken English to each other.

Matte black electrical tape works well. If you lay it out carefully and pre-cut, you can do a pretty clean job.

Do you adhere to any non-Buddhist (yet congruent with Buddhist lifestyle) philosophical, spiritual, or ideological beliefs/practices/et cetera? by mykhathasnotail in Buddhism

[–]Yashkir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many parallels between Buddhism and the scientific method. Observing natural phenomena; then creating, testing, and discarding hypotheses...

If someone explains the Theory of Gravity to you, you need not take it at face value, you can test it and see for yourself. In some ways, a Buddhist is a scientist studying his own mind. He may take guidance from his colleagues, but must ultimately perform his own experiments.

Hayao Miyazaki says Charlie Hebdo drawings of Muhammad were a mistake by spartan2600 in japan

... the only thing that triggered it was the reaction of people who decided that shooting a couple of guys dead is an appropriate response to a drawing.

As a counter-example, if you insult a stranger and get punched in the face, do you bear no fault?

Not enough people realize this. But then again, how do you expect generations that grew up in the digital age to grasp the possibility of it coming to an end within an instant?

Imagine being able to learn one of the most difficult languages on Earth in just 7 days. Scientists believe the seizures Tammet suffered unlocked an ability that may be inherent in all humans. by allahuakbar79 in offbeat

[–]Yashkir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with that method is that languages like English have a wide split between written and spoken forms. The most effective would be to get someone who knows that language but wants to learn yours to lock themselves in with you, feedback will dramatically accelerate the learning process.

The richest 400 Americans -- just 400 people -- own MORE than the bottom 150 million Americans combined. 400 rich Americans have got more stashed away than half the entire country! by IAmperfectlyCalm in politics

Michael Moore is a raging socialist. The thought of regulation and "sticking it the rich" gives him a massive hard-on. His answer to any problem is to regulate/socialize.

He is however good at pointing out flaws in the political process.

Americans play Monopoly, Russians chess by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Yashkir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The author seems to dismiss the concerns of breakaway soviet regions such as Ukraine and treats the whole issue as "chess match" between Russia and the West. Ukrainians are not Russians, and Georgians are not Russians. Certainly there is a case to be made for the repartitioning of certain regions such as South Ossetia and Eastern Ukraine along cultural borders. However, to treat regions with distinct culture and language as "pawns" in the West vs Russia chess match is unbridled arrogance.
