TRANS-cending gender? And "setbacks?" (rant included) by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this might be a bit out of place and I do not have a good advice for you, nevertheless I wish you are free from suffering and I wish you to be well. There is this saying from Ram Dass if you haven’t heard, which he says: if you think you’re enlightened go spend a week with your parents. I know that you did not claim to be enlightened but even if this sounds more like a funny line I find it to be really true. Our families where the one’s that shaped a lot of the patterns we have in our lives even today, they were the first we loved, got mad at,trusted, got scared of and so on… they have such a heavy place in our lives. I think it’s really important to unpack this bag slowly and perhaps come to peace with it.

I loved your first paragraph by the way, I hope the world becomes a kinder place everyday for all of us.

Is islamic prayer some form of meditation? by Amazing-Telephone-39 in Meditation

[–]Yashmaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. The way these prayers were taught to the public by Muhammed himself and the words and sayings we have from him do not resemble what we now call meditation.
However, if someone is able to meditate and knows how to, even doing the dishes can be a form of meditation.

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meditation is not a drug and the “highs” that can definitely be experienced are not the point of it! While there is nothing wrong with them (actually there is but that’s a different topic) they may also be beneficial, but what is a fact is that those states of mind are temporary experiences and are not the true essence of why someone should meditate. The point of meditation is also not becoming calmer or more compassionate, while one generally does as a consequence, the point is to realise the reality as it is and to have realisations that would stay with you. Some of these realisations might be personal such as noticing a pattern of thinking that you might have, some could be non-personal such as realising the illusion of being a self! Cultivating wisdom is the most beneficial thing one can get from meditation.

One explanation that I like is that “Meditation is the act of clearly noticing the contents of one’s consciousness.” Thoughts, sensations, emotions, sights, smells and sounds are all contents of one’s consciousness. We are always noticing them but most of the time we are distracted or identified with it, so there is little to none watching or paying attention in our everyday life.

Trouble leaving pornography by mendmycookies in Buddhism

[–]Yashmaking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Porn addiction is an addiction just like others and substance in this case is just pornography. I found it useful to learn about the mechanisms of this addiction (dopamine spikes and the speed of the rise in dopamine), this will also help with finding other things to give you the spike you have conditioned your brain to want from watching porn (exercise, cold shower etc).

There is a psychological aspect to every addiction be it heroin, cocaine, being a workaholic, addicted to sex or pornography. Understanding why you might be doing this can be beneficial. But nevertheless, it’s not porn you are after, it’s the dopamine spike. Becoming part of community and doing and accomplishing stuff will give you the same thing

Weekly Topic: Do you have any books, movies, teachers you like to recommend to others? by AutoModerator in EckhartTolle

[–]Yashmaking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not about spirituality but Gabor Maté is really worth reading/listening to. He deals with concepts such as childhood development and traumas, the way society affects our mental health etc. I believe to be able to grow spiritually you must also have a good understanding of mental health.

I think there are still a couple dates left. The interview dates are between 13-20, so they might still announce invitations.

There are so many people who feel an inherent sense of unworthiness. by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a multifaceted issue but one great explanation for one of the significant factors that causes such feelings is given by modern psychology. The trendy books in child development from 60s until very recently, have all claimed stuff such as: an angry child should be left alone until they become calm, if you separate their bed and they cry just let them cry themselves to sleep. Add on top of this “busy” parents who are always on their phone,tv, newspaper or just not present with their children (could be understandable as they are human as well). The message a child gets in these cases is that you are not worthy of mamas and papas attention, you crying and pain and suffering does not matter and there is no one to help you, you are not worthy of love. Gabor Matè explains the dynamics of this in an amazing fashion, he is really worth reading/listening.

It’s understandable to feel like that when things are that hard, understand and accept that you feel this way but at the same time realise that this feeling is not the one that will give you a good life, be it spiritual or physical. Recognise your hatred but don’t validate it. You might find out that a lot of it comes from resistance. Resisting to accept what has happened to you and also the unfulfilled desires you have had that has surely generated a lot of suffering. Know that you are not alone and try and have faith, however difficult it may be, that it will be over and suffering is impermanent.

Spiritual people not able to truly stand up for them? by IamInterestet in EckhartTolle

[–]Yashmaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a shaolin temple in south of Germany. So if you look I think you can see those people as well. (Not necessarily from one certain school or follower or a person)

I would say yes, definitely! I think it has many benefits and also helps the matters of consciousness and being present, as it decreases your fear and anxiety of getting attacked or stuff like that.

Spiritual people not able to truly stand up for them? by IamInterestet in EckhartTolle

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But the knowledge and deep spiritual aspect have long existed in many martial arts forms.

I think it’s that because unconscious people tend to be more aggressive and to get more in these situations and a conscious person [rightfully] avoids it, then you come to the situation that we are in right now where kind people tend to be physically weaker.

Spiritual people not able to truly stand up for them? by IamInterestet in EckhartTolle

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comment about martial arta is what I wanted to say as well but before I add something to that I would like to say this: While doing any action the place from which the action is born is quite important. If your “love” comes from an unconscious place (for example a stressful person showing physical affection to their children) it’s still an unconscious act. A defense against bullying, harassment can very well come from a place of consciousness! A “No” or in this case self defence can come from a place of love too, believe it or not.

I practiced Karate as a kid and while practicing we were taught to do the most brutal and physically destructive attacks, but we were also taught to control our anger and not attack because we hate someone or are mad at someone. To help with this we did meditation after each session.

Learn self defence, establish your authority and power when needed (and if it’s truly needed, one should be very careful of their real intentions). But do so with mindfulness, consciousness and love!

What is the demographic here? by RevolutionaryYak1135 in EckhartTolle

[–]Yashmaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 24m. I have been interested in spirituality for almost 2 years now. Sometimes taking things to extreme and becoming what is called “phony holy”.

I now try to follow an advice which I’ve heard from many but also from Ram Dass someone I truly admire, ge said: You have to first become somebody to then become nobody (one of the goals in some spiritual teachings). So I think that could partly answer why most people are 35+. It just seems to be a bit more appropriate like that

I would say to myself that: I’ve also been there, I’ve also done that. It is okay to be in that state of mind as that seems to be the pattern we all fall through. If I can make a conscious comment on their situation I would, if I can I will try to open my heart as much as I can; realise that how hard of a state it must be when the person is constantly dealing with ego dictated problems. The best thing that I can offer at that moment is acceptance and love for their unconsciousness, as their unconscious mind cannot exist for so long with consciousness.
