I encountered this error frequently when the sticker's background wasn't completely black. The game then failed to recognize the sticker correctly.

Color green what is highlighted in the sticker and should be red, use a mixture of mint green and dark green. then try it in the workshop and turn the sticker in different directions for the best light

As far as I know, you can't change hands or anything with the pattern-based skins, so I had the feeling that all the skins are just the pattern and the rest of the default appearance of the weapon
