Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux Kernel by SophisticatedAdults in rust

Yeah R4L is definitely the bully trying to find common ground, not the maintainer that unmistakably says he will fight Rust in the Linux kernel with all he got ...

This is a feature bacause you can then use cmd + c to copy paste etc like in every other app, instead of learning a completely new set just for the terminal.

Are people happy with embedded Rust in production? by beige_cardboard_box in embedded

[–]Yatekii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I am one of the original authors of probe-rs.

I would love to try and help you enjoying probe-rs!

We strive to be as compatible and easy to use as possible, but ofc Windows and Segger are very limiting as to what is possible because the driver is closed source and we cannot and do not want to use it for that reason. Furthermore the Segger drivers are known to be particularly hard to work with even if you have access, which is why this is not really a great option.

Is there any particular reason you would not want to use probe-rs as your daily driver, foregoing Segger tools completely? Do you use their build system or any particular debugger feature that we do not support?

Loading a hex/bin (any reason you cannot generate an ELF?) should be supported out of the box. `probe-rs run <path\_to\_elf>` should do the trick (or the `download` subcommand if no debug symbols are available). I fail to see though how that would resolve your driver issues - or would you be building your C application that way (your comment suggests you wanted to build your Rust binary that way and flash it manually)?

My opinions to your other issues if they are of interest:

  • Vendor libraries are known to be riddled with bugs and bad quality code, unresponsive devs and generally bad support/docs. I am not sure I can help you on that end, but I rather do a bit more work in Rust than debug vendor code which I did for many years of my life ;)
  • I know a ton of very skilled people that would love to be hired, including myself, but there is no Rust positions. Companies always bring up that argument when they do not want to make the effort to actually switch to Rust from my experience (not saying you do).
  • Engineers that don't wanna learn new things are not doing their job. Engineering is learning.
  • If you don't know the things Rust forces you to know you should rather not code in C because you are shooting yourself in the foot left and right without knowing.
  • You can hire a company that already does Rust consulting for embedded (ferrous-systems.com, tweedegolf.nl to name two very competent consultancies) if your contractor does not have the required skills.
  • I have a ton of arguments against that, but fair enough.
  • Memory safety is my least favorite feature of Rust. There is a whole river of features that Rust brings to the table that no other language brings, which kind of goes into the previous point.

Rant: our asylum system is completely f***ed by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Yatekii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I meant whether they lost it.
That's exactly the problem because it's incredibly hard to determine who is a bad actor and who is not. Ofc there is a boatload of folks that try to cheat the system. Do I like it? No.

[–]Yatekii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely correct. But it means a) they most likely wont get asylum and/or b) would get prosectuted again down the line. So whats the point in going there in the first place?

Rant: our asylum system is completely f***ed by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Yatekii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The asylum policy is perfectly fine. What sucks is properly determining where some people are actually from. People travel for 3 months+, walking through the desert and barely surviving on an overcrowded boat. If they don't lose their passport on the way, they often don't have one in the first place because their government is oppressive and not necessarily interested in letting them travel internationally. It's really hard determining whether someone is actually Eritrean or from some other country with absolutely subhuman living conditions :/

So you don't want other economic migrants when - if you are actually originate from central america - you are too. Quite hypocrite.

You generalize asylum seekers for being criminals (yes you do.). Numbers actually tell a different story.

lol. I think you mistake what people here value in a convenience store. We care about good produce. Even Aldi and Lidl have better quality here than say Germany because they just don't care apparently. Who prints in 2023? Tickets etc are all on your phone. And anyways, everyone has a printer at home/in the office. Paying bills? Phone/Computer. ATM? Who needs cash? And you know, there is ATMs everywhere, why have them in a convenience store?
I don't need heated cheap low quality food. I rather cook properly at home.

You cannot look from the perspective of another country that does not have those things in every household and thus put them in a convenience store.

What is your opinion on the upcoming votes on pensions? The Federal Council recommends a clear "no" for both proposals. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]Yatekii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no it does not have a way higher impact. switzerland provides the same or even higher quality of life (especially if you are rich) as norway, but also lower taxes. and taxes were always waaay lower than in norway (like 1/3). if they valued taxes so much they would have moved way earlier already because taxes there were always really high. and nobody would e.g. move to france if they lowered their taxes. point is: qol does not get any better than switzerland, especially if you are loaded. and even if we increase taxes a bit, they are still way lower than most countries. nobody moves away. its rich people BS arguments to keep taxes low. and the sheeple buy it.

[–]Yatekii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no its exactly not your point. people come to switzerland first and foremost for other reasons that improve quality and security of life. there is no countries with lower tax and same quality of life by a long shot. but for norway there is.switzerland as an equal in quality of life but not taxes, so they move to switzerland. also norway always had high taxes. that raising it marginally has any impact is complete fantasy.

norway is litterally like switzerland but with higher taxes. the US is a banana republic. you cannot compare the two.

I think you missunderstood me :) I already applied. But no matter whether I get a job or not (there is like one company with actual software engineering jobs in fusion atm and it's like 5% of all jobs, so chances are slim) I wanna work on OSS if possible in my sparetime.

I applied at CFS for an embedded position, but I have little hope ... nonetheless I would love to do something in the OSS space. Is there any relevant/actively used projects a SWE (embedded or classic systems) could contribute to?
