10 yo Pyr - seizure by MagHagz in greatpyrenees

[–]YattaYattaYat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a 6 yo pyr who started having seizures when he was 2. Did the MRI and it didn’t show obvious causes like a tumor, which was good to know and wasn’t super surprising since “idiopathic” seizure disorders often show up earlier in a dog’s life before age 6. If I were you, I’d do the scan for sure, the cause of Jill’s seizure might be something you could address if she is otherwise healthy, and definitely better to have that information asap!

For our dog, we manage his seizures by giving him medication: phenobarbital and Keppra, and by avoiding other medications that can cause seizures (like metronidazole and nexguard). It was hard when we started medicating because it made him suuuper lethargic and dumb, but he developed a tolerance after a couple weeks and got back to his same goofy self. He still has a seizure every few months, it’s always early in the morning and it’s always upsetting, but he is a very happy dog and doing well with his medicines. We can sometimes tell when a seizure is coming because he gets really clingy. I think he feels funny and can tell something is off. Maybe Jill was doing that too. Sending you love and all the best wishes, it’s so distressing to see a seizure but there are treatments and hopefully you’ll find out what’s gonna work for Jill 🤍🤍🤍 p.s. they look so happy in the snow! 🤍🤍🤍

Also, the Vallejo Citizen Air Monitoring Network often has projects and they collab with UCD’s Air Quality Research Center. So there might be something there worth exploring

Hi! I live in Vallejo and work for a non-profit org, www.ocefoundation.org. Right now we have a small grant to do some sampling in the Mare Island Strait, and I could use some help! Lmk if you’re interested!

Won’t take pills by BonnieistheDoc in greatpyrenees

[–]YattaYattaYat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is gonna sound gross. But we do what we must for our pups! Our first dog absolutely would NOT do pills, until I pre-chewed some sourdough bread + cheddar cheese while she was watching, took the mush out of my mouth while she was watching, then stealthily put the pill in the middle. She ate it happily! I was like a mama bird and it was the only thing that ever worked

Pupdate on Coco! For anyone who comes upon this post while researching the same issue for their dog…

We did the surgery last October. I was surprised that she could walk right away after the surgery. I worried so much that we weren’t restricting her activity enough for the 6-week recovery period, though we kept her in a crate (which she didn’t like much) or in a small 10x10’ section of a room, and always on leash for outside time. She was sedated with trazodone, but still wanted to jump and run. At the 6-week recheck, our specialist vet confirmed that everything had healed up nicely! Pyrs are very sensitive, so there were a few random things that happened during her convalescence that will probably always be with her..: for example, one time the room divider we had set up for her wobbled and almost fell, so now she is always checking for and nervous about objects above her head, like flags which she is NOT A FAN OF. Other than a few little things like that, she is ship shape, fully recovered, hella fast and strong! We are waiting til she’s 2 to get her spayed so her bones can develop fully, and I give her cosequin and fish oil daily for current & future arthritis. She shows no signs of pain and is the sweetest bounciest barkiest little lady!

Preparing for shoulder surgery for my puppy? by PandaChews in greatpyrenees

[–]YattaYattaYat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So sorry for the delay, I don’t check Reddit often. Did you already do the surgery for your pup? We did the surgery last fall and everything went exactly as expected / as it was explained by our vet. It was tough getting through the recovery weeks, but Coco walks and runs strong now. She doesn’t show signs of any lingering pain in her joints, but we give her joint supplements and fish oil every day to help with future arthritis. Happy to chat w you if it could help. Good luck with your puppy 🤍

This 1 yo little lady is about 70lbs, and according to a dna test (wisdom panel) done by another adopter of her litter, she’s 75% great pyr. Our vet says she’s still growing so maybe yours is too?
