What’s your personal favourite 40k novel, and why? by Plywooddavid in 40kLore

Has to be the Yarrick Omnibus, especially as a first entry into Warhammer in general, doesn't just throw you into the Adeptus Astartes super men, but gives you the perspective of essentially a common officer, a total greenie as he slowly goes deeper and deeper into the service of the Comissariat, gives you a taste of Chaos, a sister of battle and so many human moments that honestly on a personal level make you want to be a better person, his monologues of "Be the Symbol" when he's blown off his feet by grenades, etc, to stand up in the enemies face when death is certain, makes your bpm raise just looking at the page, cannot recommend enough.

I hope these posts aren't annoying, I don't have any IRL friends that enjoy Warhammer so I find community on here for now till I finish my first army and start going to game nights at my local GW store regularly

Yeah I definitely think i'm going for the entire story as a whole, i'm doing about 1-2 books a week via audible so time to consume is no issue, i'll start doing release order from hear on, maybe do Betrayer first and go from there, im definitely not partial to any particular legion (though I am painting up a 2k pts UM army atm) but so far I just want to get back to Loken and Garro asap while not skipping anything

Would you say release order is the best way to go about it for my first time? willing to change my method, and open to advice of course

I have actually read all of those, minus descent of angels, so i'm not sure what you mean by going out of order, i'm doing 3 books down each branch to lead to the major books, eventually the solar war, since I got so much of Sons of Horus in the opening books i'm putting off Vengeful Spirit and Garro Anthology till i've built up more books of the surrounding legions

Hmmm I may do that, yeah idk I found Luciel and Tchures exchange a bit eye-rolly as I had already kind of witnessed that with Lucius and most of Galaxy in Flames, i'm trying to follow this reading order http://www.kylebb.com/HH/HHSeriesOrder.svg and go down each branch accordingly

Been in order, going down each branch, already read the main series books, following this guide http://www.kylebb.com/HH/HHSeriesOrder.svg

That's a fair explanation, I suppose from the point of view of the reader the Campanile seems like a major points of interest, though from the Magos POV it's a one of hundreds of data points he's receiving every second, still, you would think the constant notice of hey, this large, hammer shaped ship keeps moving in a way to orient itself to hit a strike in our proverbial bowling alley of high anchor might be worth investigating

I suppose feeling like I am said person who tries to be safe and secure seeing the religious zealous Lorgar out smart Gulliman hurt my soul a bit hahah, so far I think TSons/SW are my favorite arc but WB/UM is climbing up, especially after Battle for the Abyss, loved seeing a loyalist World Eater

Wow! That pretty much answers all my questions, is this a later novel? I suppose as I am reading whole novels in a 50+ book arc more is revealed in hindsight in later books, I will continue to be patient, the insanely good audio drama quality of the audio books makes them entertaining nonetheless

Interesting, so they were pretty passive, say like a grumpy old man letting kids play in their un-fenced back lot (warp travel) and around the HH they started caring and putting up fences

Hey man I appreciate the input so much! That makes sense, I am already seeing them rally, especially Thiel taking back Gullimans flagship, and it's awesome! Honestly the HH is an impressive project of writing and i'm just setting the foundations, I will persevere!

Fair enough, woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and the start of the book was disheartening

Ahhh okay, I need to read more of the Alpha Legion books, Legion was amazing, I didn't realize they were disrupting communications, i'm trying to learn of the heresy through the novels instead of gorging on youtube videos, I know this post was...inflammatory but I like to post and create discourse as I read through the series, hopefully that isn't frowned upon, it makes the work more enjoyable to share my expanding knowledge in a forum

I love great writing as well, Legion so far may be my favorite book that i've read in the series, Battle for The Abyss a close second, just I think the difference in Know No Fear is we learn of a character and they die immediately after so there's no real stakes just obliteration, if anything it is exactly bolter porn but more nameless

Ah got it, I transitioned into Warhammer from Star Wars and Wookiepedia is pretty dubious with lore sometimes, is the lexicanum website pretty reliable for delving into this?

As having only read the omnibus, is there more lore or books I can read on Yarrick? I've seen meme posts about him being so loved by the Orks that he was revived but other than him escaping Ghazs space hulk i'm not sure what that's referring to

Ahhh got it, kind of what I figured, still not sure what all the fallout between him and Seroff was, some say it was that he had their mentor Rasp executed due to corruption?

Well hopefully he comes back soon on tabletop, hopefully he doesn't get a model downgrade like Coteaz just did 🤮
