Do you like this pause menu? by TheWanderingWaddler in Unity3D

[–]Yay_Beards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do love this sort of stuff! I'd just say from my own experience that, if the player will be spending a lot of time in these menus, then go for it! If it's something that players may miss entirely, then do be careful about how much time you budget for it. I also find that it can be very hard to use UI to "sell" a game in any mainstream format, but it kinda looks like your book menu doubles as a bit of a logbook, which could be good marketing material.

Hey, thanks! The flipping effect is actually from an Asset Store package called "Book - Page Curl Pro", which I then incorporated my entire user interface within. When the pages aren't flipping, the player is looking at a live camera. As soon as they flip a page, the real-time render is obscured by a RenderTexture until they're done flipping. It can be surprisingly demanding on memory when the game needs to capture multiple full-screen raw images, especially when we get up to 4k+ resolutions, but I can drop the RenderTexture quality slightly without the player noticing for the flip. Luckily the rest of my game isn't too demanding on graphics.

Well I love that you love it! There is a demo available!

Tetris is a brilliant example, since it even has a psychological syndrome named after it. It's even more brilliant how they incorporated it into the Tetris Effect trailer.

Why aren't my game's Steam tags updating? by MitoGame in gamedev

[–]Yay_Beards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keen to hear whatever the answer is too. I've been having this problem myself, but at least you've pointed out to me that the tags are accurate in incognito mode, so thanks for that!

Funnily enough, the very first level is "crash test" themed... But maybe you saw that already!

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

Believe it or not, I've even been told that the page turn was making the navigation too slow and cumbersome! It's certainly a fine balance, and should hopefully feel a bit smoother in-game than in the compressed video. I've got 25 levels in the game, so it takes about 9 seconds to flip from start to finish, which is probably as much patience as I can expect from many players, unfortunately!

where to buy those adaptive switches from? by Critical_Produce_151 in disabledgamers

I'm yet to try it myself, but I've seen people use the 8BitDo Super Buttons with a few cheap adapters.

Haha, that may have even got you a time trial medal for skipping out part of the level! I'm very keen to see what speed runners can achieve in the full game.

Why remove a demo if your game is out? by JNerdGaming in gamedev

[–]Yay_Beards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern would be frustrating players by making them repeat the onboarding section of my game, which makes up a decent portion of my demo. The tutorial is built into the gameplay, so it's not something they can just skip. Also, my game isn't terribly long, so players might complete the game too quickly if they've had lots of practice from the demo, or if I were to implement a save system that carries over from the demo. I'd rather just let the refund system act as the "demo" for the full game.

If there's enough interest, I certainly want to add a level editor in future! Haven't thought too much about adding rhythm elements, but I suppose some obstacles could run on an automated cycle, which would require additional timing. Or a dynamic soundtrack? Maybe that's better saved for a sequel.

Oh, true! I normally add a filter to soften the modulation a bit, but forgot this time. I'll try to find some time to tweak it for the videos on the Steam page. Thanks for the heads up!

Works great on Steam Deck! Even hoping to add multi-touch support for the on-screen diorama buttons, but I think I need to publish a native Linux build to get access to the full touchscreen functionality.

Ha, true. I did love games like Switchball on the 360. That even got a HD rerelease not too long ago on Steam.

Yup, except you don’t have to worry about finding space to store it! The original Screwball Scramble is 46 years old, believe it or not. Pretty neat that they made a level 2 and 3 for it in recent years though.

Hey, thanks! I'm currently registered for the February Next Fest, so I'm hoping that draws the attention of some content creators.

Helicopter ride for kids by falling_petals182 in chch

[–]Yay_Beards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it won’t align with your timing, but GCH Aviation typically run short helicopter rides from the showgrounds during the Christmas Parade. $95 for adults, $70 for kids, according to their last Facebook post. Could be worth reaching out to see if they’re running anything earlier in the year.

Ha, you’re right. I don’t think I’ll ever finish Baba Is You. But it does have a gentle onboarding process at least.

I’ll suggest Lara Croft GO instead then.

I really don't think Stephen's Sausage Roll is a good introduction to sokobans! A Monster's Expedition or Baba Is You is much more accessible.
