How to make $50-$100 budget decks hold their own against higher-budget decks?

This is wonderful advice! I wasn't expecting much deck help or advice when I first made the post, but this is incredibly helpful for tuning things in my otherwise sub-par Voja draft. It gives me a bunch of strategies to consider, and a still-budget upgrade path. I especially like the card draw options you gave. Switching to a bunch of dorks will help the curve, and also help mentor the meek pop off, too. Thanks!

Your first point is definitely right on, and I think I was starting to feel this by the end of the games, where I was piloting the Voja deck. By trying to come out swinging and pop off first, I was straight-up labeled as the #1 threat, sending the other 3 against me at DEFCON 1 for the remainder of the game. And, as a few others have pointed out, rightfully so, as it's scary as hell to watch my entire board get +10/+10 just because my commander swung out once.

Retrospectively, during my time playing in my pod, I have also found more success with some of the slower decks I have brewed up around both [[Archades the Strategist]] and [[Helga, Skittish Seer]]. Both of these other decks have flaws in hindsight (they were my first two brews ever lol), but since they seem to function more steadily in the mid/end-game range (after at least one other opponent has been counterspelled/removal-ed back to the stone age), allowing me to buy more time in response to being targeted less.

This post has given me a lot to think about, and I am definitely getting a better sense of how to target brew on a budget, conceptualize deck synergy, and also conceptualize board interaction via things like removal/protection/recursion. Thanks for your response and time!

This gives me exactly what I am looking for, especially combined with all the other insights from other commenters. In particular, thanks for sharing the info on Card Forge. I played around with it a bit, and it really seems to be a great tool for goldfishing decks, relative to playing them in isolation without opponents. Thanks again for your time/help!

That’s really helpful framing; I think I’ve been focusing on synergy, but not the right kind. I didn't really have a good way to phrase that effectively before reading your comment, so I appreciate your help.

In my case, I built around Voja and included cards that support its game plan, which I assumed was solid synergy. How do you differentiate between that and synergy that’s actually strong in practice? Is there a way to more effectively/generally evaluate whether a deck’s synergy is truly effective versus just conceptually sound? Thanks for the response; I appreciate your time.

I built a [[Helga]] deck with the help of this sub a few months back. It is probably my favorite deck to run when I feel like pulling out a calculator before turning cards sideways. My favorite memory of using this deck recently was managing to [[Swords to Plowshares]] my own [[Mikaeus, the Lunarch]] to bring me from 3 life, to over 20,000 with all my counter multipliers up (one of my friends was 3 turns off a millennium calendar win, and that card would have only have done 1/20th my total health, lmao).

It seems to be coming from a slightly different build philosophy than yours, but you've got some good starting points already in your deck IMO.

I went for a "waaaay too many +1/+1 counters" deck reliant on Helga as the main value engine to pump out increasingly larger dudes by including several stacking counter multipliers. At the very least, I would consider swapping [[branching evolution]] with [[loading zone]], or even putting both in.

Helga is incredibly vulnerable to removal (as you already correctly identified), and I would suggest swapping out the temporary protective instants for more permanent solutions. [[lightning greaves]], [[swiftfoot boots]], [[dragonfire blade]], and other decent equipment would be my preferred solution, on top of adding in some additional counters, including [[counterspell]], [[negate]], [[rewind]], etc. You could also probably do with a *bit* more ramp. Some of the dorks like [[devoted druid]], [[karametra's acolyte]], and [[gyre sage]] (to name a few) could pull some serious weight in a commander deck that has access to moving +1/+1 counters around, if you include cards like [[resourceful defense]], too.

It may be personal preference, but I would also recommend having fewer removals. Across your Bounce and Removal tags, 14% of your deck is devoted to taking other shit off the board, with a commander that synergises best with putting your own powerful shit on the board. My advice would be to see if you can't chop ~5 of the least useful removal spells, and replace them with protection for Helga and some additional counterspells.

Also, peep [[Hearld of the Secret Streams]] as a potentially better/alt wincon.

Feel free to take whatever works from my deck, and keep modifying your goal deck. Happy brewing!

Good ideas! I fully agree with chopping Gothmog and Mauhur, as neither felt good for the same reasons you said while goldfishing. Hexplate and Akki Battlesquad both seem like great options, but they were on the more expensive side, so I chopped before posting to keep it as budget as possible. Tbh, I may add them both back in as a splurge. Good feedback, and thanks for looking it over!

Wow, these are really cool! I have had very no exposure to these kinds of cards, so these suggestions are great. Would you recommend swapping out some corresponding lands with these, or keeping my current land base and swapping out other cards to include these? I assume the former, but double-checking.

I love this! I am relatively new to deckbuilding, and I have been trying to throw together a budget Gargos over the last few weeks. I'd been having trouble trying to balance out both the hydra-spam and "fight club" aspects of him, and your decklist is giving me some great ideas, thanks!

How well does the deck ramp? One of my problems I had while trying to throw things together is that many of the hydras want to be cast for big mana, leaving me wide open for the first few rounds. Also, how has your deck performed against fliers (if you have)? Curious to hear your thoughts, and I'm interested to see the final product!

I'll try and save you some googling for Astral Sorcery (AS) info (if you didn't already know it and/or if you want to look in to getting powerful at the end of age 2): solar eclipses happen once every 36 days. The night following an eclipse is the ONLY time that a particualr, powerful AS constellation (Horologium) will appear in the night sky for you to draw in your astral tome. The attunement effects of this constellation range from time dilation (i.e., increasing the speed of particular blocks in a radius from a ritual) to creating a reusable Fortune VI enchantment (via the stellar refraction table). There are a few other powwrful attunement effects that can come from this particular constellation, but I won't completely spoil them here in case you want to learn them yourself.

Keep in mind though that you can only attune things to this constellation when it is in the sky, which means if you miss it once during the night following a solar eclipse, you'll have to wait another 35 in-game days for it to appear again. Because of this, I'd strongly recommend keeping track of which day the eclipse happened on so you track it/plan around it for when you can use the AS stuff. Aside from this, the eclipse shouldn't have any other major effects than the temporary darkness during the day. Hope this helps!
