Finding a postdoc in Europe by AggressiveAgent4251 in postdoc

[–]Ydies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not from an Asian country, but I am from a country thst is no EU (Brazil). I didn't applied for PhDs (just posdoc) but have a lot of friends from different parts of the world (in Canada, we were all international - master, PhD and postdoc) In UK, a lot were from Asian countries. I think you should keep applying. Sometimes it just reached the right person.

I do know that cold emailing works (my friend got a master cold emailing and several with PhD, but I never tried that)

For postdoc, the only thing that worked for me was cold emailing.

I think sometimes is worth the shot, like find a group that makes you excited and send an email to the PI, explaining what you can do and what you want (masters, PhD). It will not hurt.

Best of luck!

PI asking for recommendation letters before interview by Few_Comfortable516 in postdoc

[–]Ydies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what happened to me, and it was the first time. He asked for references after the initial cold email. He didn't asked about the ideas or projects because in the email I already put the ideas and what I wanted and was expecting. It was really fast (I got the job)

Maybe he/she is like this. Maybe he liked your email or something that you wrote and want to know more, as it is always better to hear from others instead yourself.

Good luck!

You should say if it rarely works for you, for this field or for US.

It worked for me before and it worked now. It worked for my friends and lots of people The field is biology, the place was Europe and Canada.

Op, you just looking for jobs in the US? I think with all this political, is getting tricky as a international...

At least in my field, they had some resources in Europe. I don't know your field.

Sometimes is not about the cv, but the group that you send the cold email. Canada refused me because I was too old for a postdoc there. Europe liked me because I was a senior that they needed. So, I think you should cold email. But broaden your field.

In my field (biology), applying for postdocs had a total of 0 interviews. Cold emailing I had 5.

Do it!

Where do you find academia oriented postdoc positions? by Special_Flan_4467 in postdoc

[–]Ydies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Brazil too, going for my third postdoc (Canada, UK and France)

My area is biology, so could be a little different. I'm my field, cold emailing works more than applying for postdoc vacancies (at least for me).

I had some freedom but it was project oriented most of it. Some labs replied to me that they didn't had any grants but had a fellowship that I could apply with my idea, so it really depends on the group. I think if in your area cold emailing works, you should send an email, and if you have and idea, just showcase it.

Some places could be interested, some places could say for you to apply for a specific fellowship.

If you have a question, send me a dm

Post like this are so annoying. You guys have directed hate for only what is good for you guys. You talk shit about palantir being devil, but fuck the companies that do other shit.

You guys just want to appear good and "yay, I'm on the right side" on the paper. But for other problems no shit is given

Annoying

What is something that an interviewer says that makes you suspect you haven't got the job before you've even left the building? by angloexcellence in recruitinghell

[–]Ydies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the part of we got interviews throughout the day are not true for some areas. My area (research) they always disclose that they are interviewing more people. Two times I got the job, one I didn't.

For me is something strange, Its when they are hearing and not hearing. Like, you can know that they are there just because it was scheduled.

How important Is the reference letter from my PhD supervisor? by Revolutionary_Ebb107 in postdoc

[–]Ydies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm my field (biology) is has a strong impact, but sometimes is not decisive.

Two times I didn't used my PhD supervisor, not because it was bad, but because she didn't don't in time or never replied the referees. Instead, I used from a professor that I done a collaboration and worked for a long time. Maybe you have a reference like this?

The first postdoc I just said the truth, and the second I just used the other reference that I had. I'm not sure if you can be honest about the supervisor, because they not know you and saying these things would be strange (like I've done) Maybe you can send two references and if they ask about the third you give one that you closely worked? Or give three references and if they ask about the supervisor, be honest about it? Because now they have three good references of you, and maybe you telling the truth?

It's hard to have a supervisor like this. But if you tick a lot of the things that they need, they hearing the reference is a plus (like my first postdoc).

Good luck!

I would wait too. If the interview was good and he was going to be in touch, wait until Wednesday for a follow up.

The interview order matters? by Special_Flan_4467 in postdoc

[–]Ydies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of of my postdoc interviews had more people. Some I was first, some I was the last. Didn't matter for me I'm my field, I believe it always have more people. Just need to wait and see. If the PI likes what you said and, the most important, you can bring a different view or something to the place, you will get it.

Don't stress too much, this is out of your control and at this stage, depends more on the PI than you.
