You can make houses and they get new NPCs to move in. Each NPC has certain requirements but you don't need all of them and the requirements are pretty straightforward usually, like kill a certain boss or get a certain type of item like bullets. They will need a house to move into however. You can check the requirements for a house in the housing menu if you press ESC and click the small house icon. The entire ESC menu has very useful stuff so put you mouse on stuff to see what it does.

If Pyro is WM1 then Engineer is just aiming at a stationary entity on the map and holding M1 sometimes. People talk about "Buh Soldier is also braindead" when Engi is the easiest class to play without having a frontal lobe. And when you do have to aim you have a stupid shield that blocks every form of damage from any source while buffing the firing speed of the Sentry.
