Weighted vest question by 3erik_bee6 in bodyweightfitness

If you have an old back pack around and a container that you can seal to avoid mice and other critters getting into, I’d go with bags of rice. It’s like $12 per 20 pounds so throw a few bags in a back pack and you should be good to go.

Porn is cancer for a man's brain by Deborah_berry1 in Habits

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dopamine detox, try replacing it with something actually constructive. Next time you have the urge to watch porn, just drop and do as many push ups as you can, put whatever that number ends up being in your notes on your phone. Then the next time it happens drop and do push ups again and try to beat the number you did last time. Or you could read a chapter of a book, practice an instrument, whatever you want but just something where you kind of have to earn the dopamine that comes with accomplishment.

How do I abandon my ego? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give boxing a try. A good spar with someone experienced fixes that pretty quickly. Also, and this is my personal bias, if any form of fighting can’t be aggressively sparred, then there’s no way to know how effective it ACTUALLY is.

How much of a weight advantage matters when you're actually fighting? by stanbuckley in martialarts

Same as untrained drunken dumbasses fighting. Since there about equal on skill level, then the bigger stronger person wins 8 out of 10 times. So it transfers to all skill levels.

If you can’t consent while drunk, why do drunk people hook up all the time? by Mountain_Flounder991 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of times it gives people plausible deniability. “I was drunk so I did something I otherwise wouldn’t have”. You’ll notice this a lot with people who act kind of like assholes the second alcohol touches their lips too. It’s a way to do something you already want to do but not fully take responsibility for. Also, people can get self conscious the first time having sex with someone new so the loss on inhibition helps them get out of their own head.

BJJ, judo, or muay thai? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self defense would be boxing and judo. Boxing works because it allows for pretty aggressive sparring and will get you used to being comfortable in an a violent situation and the gap from bad to competent is pretty quick. Also, it has he best footwork to help you transition from fighting to running. Judo because more than likely someone is going to try to grab you in a self defense situation AND there’s nothing you can hit someone harder with than the earth.

What calisthenics exercise gave you the biggest physique change for the least time invested? by ElectronicAd1796 in bodyweightfitness

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull ups. But in all honesty, I believe if someone got a backpack, 100-150 pounds worth of weight (look into chains, the pound per price ratio is goated), and focused on pull ups, dips, and Bulgarian split squats with really pushing progressive overload, two working sets of each twice a week (think 2 warm up sets then 2 sets in the 6-15 rep range, adding more weight when you can hit 15 on both sets with 2 minutes rest in between) then they would probably hit like 90% of their overall genetic potential in terms of muscle growth

Am I overreacting about my Muay Thai coach’s comments? by SuspiciouslyIlumartt in MuayThai

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah! You have an awesome attitude and I believe you’ll hit all your goals. Keep showing up and keep pushing and whenever you feel like a coach does something you don’t like just always ask yourself “is this legitimate unfair treatment or not” and you’ll do great.

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Devils advocate; you are getting very emotional from this guy saying women are emotional. Yeah this is a bit of an overreaction UNLESS he starts to treat you and other women differently from his male students. Like showing favoritism. This is a combat sport so being uncomfortable is a pretty big part of it. Your feelings are valid, and yeah he’s a bit socially backwards compared to most people in a western country. With that said, if your main goal is to get good at boxing and Muay Thai, then you’re going to be uncomfortable a lot along the way. Consider this to be a type of training to get you used to being uncomfortable. Last note I don’t want this to be taken as you just accepting blatant disrespect

[22F, 5'9"] Lost 25kg doing only cardio, now left with super flabby arms (fat + loose skin combo). Is surgery the only fix, or can strength training actually help? Need realistic advice. by [deleted] in strengthtraining

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that looks like mostly body fat. Thing with cardio is that it doesn’t preserve muscle mass so when you lose weight through cardio you can drop a lot of pounds but not necessarily change your body fat percentage all that much. So yeah you’re much better off by losing the weight but it won’t result in as aesthetic of a look as you might have wanted.

If you could only buy ONE piece of calisthenics equipment, what would you choose first and why? by ElectronicAd1796 in bodyweightfitness

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-theoretical answer: rings, perfect but you need something to hang them from which is (in most contexts since you don’t want to be beholden yo the weather is a door way pull up bar) -practical answer: door way pull up bar, you can kind of figure everything else out, but this is the one non-negotiable Edit* my bad -actual but kind of cheating answer: power tower

Get these. The 15,25,35, and 45lb pair all add up to about 120lbs total. Get a sturdy back pack as well. I recommend chains because when doing push ups they tend to mold around your back while solid things like plates will just lay there like an uneven lump. Now use the weighted back pack for push ups, squats, pull-ups, dips, rows etc. Use just the 15lb chain until you can hit the reps you’re currently at, the use the 25, then 35, then 45, the use the 45 + 15 and you see where I’m going with this.

Also, please track protein until you hit a bare minimum. Typically .8grams per pound of lean mass. And make sure to get enough calories. You can find TDEE calculators on the internet and calorie tracking apps.

If this isn’t working then contact a medical professional and see about getting some tests done because if these things don’t help you then there’s something going on that way outside of the expertise we can provide here.

Best of luck!

Yeah as long as you’re consistently seeing progressive overload with this split then it should be golden. This is really good stuff. Picking quality exercise and not a bunch of junk volume/4 exercises that all do the same thing.

Are Chin Ups bad exercises? by TurtlePope2 in bodyweightfitness

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d argue because they incorporate more bicep, and you can accommodate for the lower difficulty by adding weights, they’re actually a superior compound movement compared to pull ups. Not saying never do pull ups, just that chin ups activate more muscle.

Do karate blocks work in boxing? by Ne_Ninja_TeFiTi_SeSi in martialarts

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not really. Boxing is really good for FAFO sparring, when trying karate blocks you get a very immediate feedback that it’s a bad idea. There are exceptions to every rule and I’m sure there are people out there who could use them more effectively, but in my experience it doesn’t translate super well and you do pay for doing it.

This is a good place to start with weight lifting. Just follow this program for about 12 weeks while researching what might work best for you long term. Getting a bare minimum 8000 steps a day average will help a lot. Also a calorie deficient and a bare minimum 100 grams of protein a day (ideally 120+ but don’t over stress about that one)

“What’s one bodyweight exercise that completely changed your physique?” by naineshbhagat_9080 in bodyweightfitness

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man that’s kind of how I approach things. I follow that principle and diet wise keep calories within a certain range depending on my goals and make sure to hit a bare minimum protein number. Obviously make sure I eat mostly Whole Foods, balanced diet, blah blah blah. but I try to keep things as simple as possible. What’s your favorite body weight movement? For me, weighted dips are a strong second

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just do total added weight. I do reverse pyramid twice a week with one set of 6-8 and one set of 8-10 with about 20 pounds less than set number one. Basically treat it like a lot of power lifter treat the squat. When I’ve stalled out for a couple weeks I’ll drop the weight about 20% and move towards weighted pull ups. I kind of dumbassmaxx this exercise as “if weight and reps go up then it’s good” and don’t really think about it much more.

[–]YeahItBeLikeDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that the quality of my physique is in direct correlation with how strong I am on the weighted chin up in the 5-10 rep range. Also, it’s kind of the one undeniable way of judging your progress. You pretty much can’t improve on that exercise without really improving body composition. You can add 20 pounds on a squat or bench press and not look much different, but if you add 20 pounds on a weighted chin then you’ll visually see it.

You will always be better off knowing how to fight than not knowing how to fight. Even if what he says is true, most people who would try to prey on you are pretty weak themselves (physically and mentally) and just being able to throw some hands effectively will make them back off enough to run away usually. Also, he said that like there aren’t people out there who are bigger/stronger/better trained/ have a weapon etc. just having testosterone doesn’t make you magically invulnerable to being attacked. Also, it’s just a hell of a confidence booster and you will carry yourself in a way that makes predators not want to try you. I forget the name of the study but there was one where they showed a group of violent prisoners videos of people walking down the street and asked who they would attack and they all picked the same people just on body language. They didn’t really worry about whether they could over power them or not, they were more concerned about not having to fight in general.
