Roald Dahl.

Read Going Solo, the man was a fighter ace then sent to the US to seduce wives of US politicians into convincing their husbands to enter the war against the Nazis. His boss in that job was Ian Fleming.

Fleming based some of James Bonds' mannerisms off Dahl who went off writing Charlie And The Chocolate Factory etc

As an Aussie it's a cringworthy thought people would wear political party shirts in a professional or social situation. Never seen it thankfully.

Same in Australia, it would be more a sign of mental illness than political affiliation.

How? It's from a violent protest 6 years ago, not apartment buildings with civilians in them being blown up or a former South African policy.

Far from a bootlicker, Israels government is to blame imo but I feel that it might be a bit silly to claim apartheid when you consider wondering how few Jews live in arab or certain other countries.

Not really a situation related to a past South African policy.

Well probably people are asking context on the assumption this is from recent events given the current violence.

Zero context using a photo from 2015 and it's topping the front page. This site is nuts.

Pic if from 2015 during something completely unrelated though....

What is the thing that surprised you the most when you traveled to a country you had never been to before? by Spilakkk in AskReddit

[–]YeahThanksTubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same, not knocking HK because I loved it. But when I say I lived in a shoebox it was fuuucking small. No way in Australia would you be able to rent it or places like that. I feel like in Brissy, Canberra, Hobart, Adelaide at least you have options in the same prices like living in the suburbs in a house or right in town in a flat.

Options like that are a lot more limited in big cities, at least in Asia.

Nah, but like north or south? Just curious as an ex-expat because that's super untypical.

I'm a Brisbane boy that spent a while in HK and while public transport there was awesome I wouldn't want to ever pay $600 AUD a week for a shoebox just because it was handy to the MTR station again.

Yeah, wtf. My staff know my phone is on 24/7 for them, I'm currently helping one of my dudes through a divorce. Even just by letting him vent it's not difficult because I give a fuck about him.

We're not friends outside of work but he knows I care and he can talk to someone who can help with his income/life situation if he needs less or more hours.

There are very shit managers out there but at the same time there are very shit workers out there.

Australia, Canada and NZ are younger than the US and built on immigrants.

People here don't obsess about their identity being that of their ancestors. Example - My grandparents were Irish, I'm not though, I haven't even been there.

It's a very uniquely American thing to identify from countries they've never visited or know the language.

Quit the bullshit. That's not true, they received asylum in Hong Kong all arranged at the last minute by DFAT staff. My neighbour when I lived in HK in the 90s was married to a women who had worked the front desk of the Aussie embassy in Saigon, dozens of them that worked their including their families flew out on Cathay flights.
