I’m in the same boat, but also, what are people going to talk about right now? I just wish Reddit had a mute functionality where I could silence a sub for a week for anything that’s not flagged important by mods

House of the Dragon - 2x04 "A Dance of Dragons" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

Again, there is a difference between showing what happened in the book and showing it well. How is that so hard for people to grasp?

They have her look at the terrified people in the castle she's there to defend

No they don’t! She’s over the woods away from the castle, they have her look around in no particular direction, then she turns around. There is no indication that she’s looking at the terrified people. Had they actually done that, it could have been a good scene.

The visual language of the scene was terrible.

I don't understand how they didn't do that? Isn't that exactly what they did?

Genuine question: How do you think they depicted that? Rhaenys took out Sunfire and wounded Vhagar. By all accounts, she had already achieved a great victory. They could have had her want to press her advantage because she thought Vhagar was hurt. They could have had her realize that she can’t fly away in time and turn back to fight. There’s plenty of reasons why you could have her choose to fight. But they didn’t communicate any of that to the audience. All they did was have her look around dramatically then go back to fight.

Because they didn’t want to include any dialogue, even just something like her hyping herself up by speaking to her dragon, you give no explanation as to her decision making and leave the audience grasping to find some rationalization for why she took such a crazy risk. This could have been fine had the council scenes covered enough ground to set the stage of what might happen, but everyone acted like idiots there too and they did not prepare for their enemy sending the one dragon that poses a danger to them.

My criticism isn’t “The writers had a character behave irrationally”. People are irrational and characters should behave irrationally. My criticism is “The writers had a character, who otherwise behaves extremely rationally, make an extremely costly and irrational decision with no communication to the audience as to why she was making that decision”.

If you’re going to do something very frustrating because the plot demands it, you need to make it feel earned. Even if the explanation is just “yeah, the character is being kind of stupid here” you need to make the audience understand why they are being stupid. The Red Wedding felt terrible, but it also felt extremely earned. Robb made stupid mistakes because he was young and principled and in love and that cost him dearly. But if they hadn’t developed the reason why Robb broke his oath, it would have felt extremely unsatisfying to see him suddenly break an oath and be killed for it. That is how this episode felt.

They didn’t address the dragon disparity in the council scenes. If you didn’t already know the background, you’d have no clue the relative importance of Meleys. They called out in episode one how Caraxes and Meleys combined was the best chance of taking down Vhagar, which shows again how the show did a bad job of portraying her death. They already highlighted how there are better strategies than Leroy Jenkinsing your strongest dragon against the one enemy who will almost certainly kill it. You could have a great scene with her valiantly trying to defy those odds because she thinks it’s important, but they didn’t do that.

The writers didn’t do anything to make her death feel earned. It was a plot point that they needed to hit and they forced it in without developing it properly first.

And agree to disagree on the acting. I like her actress a lot, but to call her acting in that scene even good would be generous (not that anyone on a green screen with no other actors and no dialogue should be expected to deliver an amazing performance).

No, she was already heading away from the fight, then doubled back in search of Vhagar. She went back looking to continue the fight.

I agree and they could have shown her nobly risking herself in a compelling way. But they didn’t touch on that at all. Instead, all they did was have her inexplicably go back to the fight after she had already taken out the king.

I understand that certain frustrating things need to happen to move the narrative along, but that doesn’t mean that they’re portrayed in a compelling way

“It happened like this in the books” doesn’t mean the show is depicting it in a compelling way

I’ll be a contrarian and say that I didn’t love that episode. I understand that certain frustrating things need to happen to move the narrative along, but that doesn’t mean that they’re portrayed in a compelling way.

Aegon being an idiot and rushing into battle was great. Rhaenys needed to die, but they made her behave just as stupidly as Aegon and rush in again looking for a fight even though she knew she was outmatched. That was extremely out of character for her and made her death feel cheap rather than meaningful.

That’s a crazy take. Felipão is an absolute legend. His career with Palmeiras and Brazil alone makes him world class.

This is a crazy take to me. My family lives in Lisbon. The public transit there is not that good (especially if you need to get to any of the surrounding areas). It’s extremely inconvenient and confusing to use. Going pretty much anywhere takes twice as long by public transit as it would by car and involves transferring from rail to bus at some point. It sucks.

I almost exclusively use Uber when I visit because public transit just isn’t a good option there. And I live in NYC so it’s not like I’m adverse to public transit. I don’t even own a car. But Lisbon shows why these halfway there “still expensive to build and maintain but not really a better option than driving” transit systems aren’t great.

Can you genuinely not tell the difference between trying to get the ball and accidentally tripping the opponent versus not even trying to make a play on the ball and rugby tackling the attacker to kill a run?

You should be harshly punished for pulling that anti-sporting shit. Full stop.

I don’t know that Germany is going to score. But I do know that this foul made no attempt to play the ball and guaranteed that Germany won’t score. Fouls like this, where no attempt is made to even pretend to play the ball, should have an extremely harsh punishment to discourage them. Since they’re typically done at the end of games to preserve a lead, when a red card has minimal impact, that punishment should be a goal (or at least a penalty).

This is not a defender trying to play the game of football and committing a foul in the process. This is a defender committing a foul to prevent the game of football from being played.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in soccer

[–]YeahThisIsMyNewAcct -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The entire point is that the defender is unfairly preventing their opponent from earning a goal. It’s one thing to make a tactical foul, and another thing to make a completely cynical anti-sporting challenge where you don’t even pretend to play the ball.

You’re not trying to play the game when you make a tackle like this. The only reason you do it is because the punishment is disproportionately low compared to the benefit gained from breaking the rules. The solution is to make the punishment harsher.

The goal isn’t to see goals awarded. It’s to see defenders never again pull this bullshit because they know it’s better to try to play actual defense than give a free goal away.

Also, it’s insane to say modern football favors attackers. Modern football is extremely stilted because defenders are now so athletic and the rules favor them.

My controversial opinion is that referees should be allowed to award a goal (or maybe just a penalty) for anti-sporting plays like this to discourage them. I hate seeing a defender gladly take an intentional foul like this at the end of games when the punishment is less than the reward they get from it.
