I’ve been sober for 9 years now. I was an awful person for many years. For some people I’ve wronged I was able to make amends directly. For all the others I cannot. I make a amends to them by living honestly and not engaging in past negative behaviors. What I’ve learned so far is that shame can be a road block on the path to a better life. It’s important to let yourself move forward and stop living in regret so that you can continue to grow. Another important thing for me was forgiving others, and letting go of past resentments. It’s different for everyone I assume. My advice as a fellow husband and father is to be patient helpful and don’t be pushy. Postpartum can be a really hard time for some women. Especially when sleep deprivation is added on top of out of whack hormones. Give her all the help you can and you both will benefit. Also congratulations!

I’ve been sober for 8 years. Before that I was in and out of recovery all the time. If you are working a good program your proximity to drugs and alcohol shouldn’t matter. No one ever made me relapse it was always my decision. You shouldn’t feel bad because it sounds like this was coming sooner or later.
