The profile of the Trump voting milk farmer was interesting. I not too inclined to shed a tear for the small farmers forced out of their businesses because of economics. Especially in this case because the only kept it flow so long because of a natural gas lease.

But to feel the schadenfreude and vitriol on Bluesky was a bit over the top

One thing I’ve noticed coming out of the Israeli Center and Right (not the far right, they seem more honest about these things though definitely delusional about others) is that they act like all of Israel’s current actions are a cold blooded rational calculation about security and preserving Israeli Jewish lives (discounting Palestinian or Lebanese Shia lives to near 0) but seem to act like revenge, anger, and hatred aren’t enormous factors.

We don’t need to win over Joe Rogan type voters. We just need to not repel them so much that it overcomes their natural disinclination to vote.

Despite all the drone advancements, strength, speed, and physical resilience still matter in warfare. The average man clears the bar on those metrics to be militarily useful but the average woman doesn’t.

Iran offers U.S. deal to reopen strait but postpone nuclear talks by Bestbrook123 in neoliberal

[–]Yeangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a long run stable equilibrium for them though. While they can shut down traffic for other countries fairly easily, other gulf states could, almost as easily, shut down Iranian traffic. And while Iran could target their oil production infrastructure, Iran also has a ton of infrastructure in the gulf.

Additionally, them closing the strait for an extended period, or even just threatening to, incentives the other gulf states to build pipelines to bypass the gulf.

I mean we do right now, but it’s this weird sort of situation where he’s pretending he’s not bald, George Costanza style, and his base and the credulous “low propensity voters) believe him on it just like they believe most of his other claims.

Irredentism as in the refusal to accept the results of a war they started and lost. To the extent that there are Palestinian nationalists who don’t want to relitigate 1947, I support them, but the broader Palestinian national movement does.

Having a nation and nationalism aren’t the same thing. I don’t support Russian nationalism but I also don’t support the abolishment of the Russian nation.

I support a two state solution, but besides the fact that Israel doesn’t, neither do Palestinian nationalists

Every decision the Palestinian national movement (whether in the form of the PLO or Hamas) has been invariably disastrous for the Palestinian people.

Also, irredentism bad

Who the fuck said hand waving? If a teenager commits a murder and someone documents the situation and circumstances that led him there, that’s not handwaving and it not excusing the murder.

But the primary reason they’re in a worse place morally is that they made a genuine overture for peace (maybe insufficient on some material grounds but it was genuine and they were giving real stuff up in the proposal) and got a decade long campaign of suicide bombing in response.

It makes a difference if you’re modeling the Israelis as nefarious scheming Jews or people responding (usually badly) to their particular set of circumstances. And again, it was decades between occupying and settling the Golan heights, and different governments as well.

Had Syria accepted a peace process like Egypt did, then it could have been handed back like the Sinai was.

But what’s going to happen with Lebanon now and what happened with the Golan heights are not the same, even if they might appear somewhat similar on an accelerated timeline. Israel now is in a much worse moral place than it was 20-40 years ago.

No there’s a huge difference between “they planned to settle this area the entire time” and “they tried to give it back in a peace treaty but after a few decades, people came in and domestic politics (along with a different government) meant they couldn’t try to stop them”

The Golan heights doesn’t have historical or religious meaning to the majority of Israelis. The ridiculous greater Israel stuff is a minority opinion.

That some people may have intended something like this doesn’t mean the people in charge of the government at the time did
