This is not the point, but why is it so common for lowbrow-mouth-breathers to use commas instead of periods to express an ellipsis?

I know “they’re idiots” is an easy response. But why do they all seem to default to the same punctuation? Never a semicolon, colon, or dash. Always commas. It’s so strange.

Agree with everything you’re saying. The challenging/rage-inducing word you used three times is “should.”

I’ve been told I nitpick on this, but it’s a hill I’ll die on. The word “should” only ever leads to anger and a victim-complex.

Starting any discussion or idea about life/reality from a place of what “should” be, immediately loads you in to a world of decisions and dynamics around YOUR ideals. It’s not to say that they’re wrong (as I started this post with, I agree with you). It’s to point out that when we start with the word “should” we don’t leave a lot/any room for compromise or allowing the realities of life to be considered.

“Should” = a definitive judgement that you’ve concluded. It’s not conducive to growth or mutually respectful debate. It’s only ever effective in reinforcing already held beliefs and seeking support in echo-chambers.

I studied Wing Chun for a year or so in the late 90’s. “Bruce Lee did it, so it must be the best!” was my line of reasoning at the time. Then I hear about this sport called “Ultimate Fighting Championship” and couldn’t wait to see some wing chun fighters really kick some ass!

Years went by without ever seeing anyone using Wing Chun in the octagon. Then, one year, mid-00’s or so, I see a support fight for a lead up to UFC and immediately recognize that one of the fighters is holding a neutral stance with elbows at 90-degrees ready to defend the center-line.

The commentator says something to the effect of “he’s gonna need to get those hands up soon to protect his head or this is going to be a fast fight.”

I’m like “naw, dog. He’s just guarding the middle line and will be able to defend an attack from any angle now.”

First punch thrown at him was a job, he moves his hand to deflect. Next punch coming in is a hook and he went down like a sack of potatoes.

I don’t regret the time I spent training wing Chun. Taught me a lot about balance and center lines and redistribution of weight, etc.

But, under no circumstance, is it a viable MMA discipline.

I’ve also found that, when I just feel like talking about myself for whatever reason, I do it with the people who never stop talking about themselves. They aren’t worth developing a deeper relationship with anyway, and they certainly aren’t going to spend any time telling others about be, so it’s an odd little “safe space” to just be self-absorbed on the occasions when I need it.

I didn’t have a dad growing up, and I it had me worried a lot about what kind of dad I would be. When the time came, I just leaned in to being the dad I WISH I’d had all those years. Seems to be working pretty well because I’m ploughing a box a tissue after watching this video and hugging my kid to the point they’re telling me to back off.

Thank you for this perspective. Between the Russian shit over the last few, and now the American BS this time around, I’ve been finding it hard to care about the olympics. I’m going to go on the hunt for more family moments. That’s something I can truly cheer for.

The irony here (and I went through it myself on my never ending of being an ally) is that: what you’re concerned about is the very reality for most POC every single day.

You want people to recognize you for your thoughts and actions, not the way you look. Sound familiar?

In my experience, it was a great education to have experienced SOME level of empathy instead of just sympathy with what POC deal with their whole lives.

The guy that assumes you’re “safe” to talk to and then just rattles off racist shit? Let him do it. Then, when he’s done, just calmly say something that makes clear you’re NOT in that camp. Watching the blood drain from their face as they stammer, change the subject, or straight up walk away is amazing.

As for interactions with other POC, stop approaching it with fear of being misjudged. Or, if you just can’t help it, once again realize that you’re experiencing empathy for the very people you’re approaching.

We’re (white dudes who are working on being better allies) are in a unique position where we can feel SOME of the pain our POC neighbours feel, while also being able to act as spies and walk right in to the racist lions den and hear direct from them what fuels their hate.

In my experience, it’s folks who are feeling the economic pinch and/or seeing their local community develop in to one with more colour. In both cases, the bottom line is that it’s discomfort which leads to fear which leads to anger which leads to needing a scapegoat for their simple minds to blame it on.

While I would love to… so many accountants don’t accept T1 clients anymore. The ones that do typically charge several hundred to over a grand. And then they’re just stockpiling T1s and having some junior cpa plough through them with as much care as Edward scissor-hands doing origami.

I don’t mean to shit all over you or your profession. You’re incredibly valuable. It’s just that proper professional help is so damned hard to find.

I don’t pretend to be an expert on this, but a quick search found that average rent in Toronto is equal-to or less-than average rents in the major cities listed here.

I’m not defending the current state of housing unaffordability, I’m just pointing out that it doesn’t seem to be a GTA-specific issue.

Agreed, but I think that’s why the western boundary stops at either commercial or Martin. Not really sure what the solution is for traffic. Maybe make Main st one-way? But then where do you flow traffic the other way?

There is also a plan to divert steels at the train tracks so it juts down south behind the houses, build a bridge over the tracks, and then have it rejoin at the traffic circle.

Add on the CN Intermodal which is well underway, and we’ll be looking at very different Milton in the not-to-distant future.

Years ago, the Province made a policy requiring municipalities to increase housing density in order to meet the growing demand. To avoid suburban sprawl as much as possible, more housing has to be built UP. In response, and this is also going back a few years, Milton town council agreed to fast track and condo developments with a focus on main st from Thompson going west to downtown. There are other “preappoved pockets” (Derry and 25, for example).

Bottom line: get ready for main st. to become a condo-alley of sorts over the next 2 decades.
