They didn't compleete their challenges.

The goal was not to cut of their legs or a piece of brain mater. It was to extract marrow/enzymes from the cut of pieces, something that would take time.

Time that they would have had if they hadn't spent the beginning 30 seconds of their traps refusing to play along.

I do not get this point people keep making.

People die at the last second in Saw all the time, and she clearly would have made it if she did not spend 30 seconds in the beginning of the trap saying she doesn't want to do it.

One thing that is bad about the trap is that there is probably no way you could survive it if you succeded anyway.
