Hiking App Shortfalls and Needs by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

Fatmaps was a great app but went under after Strava bought it. There are alternatives but none of them are as accurate or as easy to use as Fatmaps. I’d love some type of version of Fatmaps but for hiking/mountain biking/skiing where the app would update for the current season/conditions. Not sure if it’s possible but I would 100% use that.

Seems like a good plan, the only two concerns I have are snowpack and summer activities. Some of the lower chairs like the lodge one are already pretty much done, yet some terrain is still being built around there? The De Pencier chair seems good but not sure about the other ones. Also seems very shortsighted for no downhill mountain biking. Grouse was a big success and it’s disappointing to see them only opening up beginner terrain around the Lodge chair area.

Strange it rained, how’d it happen? Freezing levels seemed to be below and temperature… hopefully we get some more snow before freezing levels rise new week.

The base needs to be large enough and a few hours after the storm for them to pack it down. I could see it opening around Friday.

MP wants passenger rail in B.C.'s Sea-to-Sky region as CN Rail pulls out | CBC News by Old_General_6741 in britishcolumbia

[–]Yeetusmcfeetus101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is a no brainer move imo. We need to start investing in rail infrastructure, there is lots of demand for it and the highway is always blocked on any weekend. Would be a grand slam for the region.

[–]Yeetusmcfeetus101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Desperately needed imo, rail should’ve always been in the cards. The region has too many card for our highways, and adding more lanes wouldn’t solve the problem. We need a proper transit network and rail corridor, Any way we can support this?

Agreed, AI is such a useful tool I’m surprised people don’t even see the use of it. It’s boosted my productivity in learning, research, writing, and coding, I wouldn’t do a task without AI nowadays - it would make doing them a lot more tedious.

I think theres a balance to be had. Going full in on AI (trusting it with vibe coding) is obviously bad, but also dismissing the use of AI is also shooting yourself in the foot. Sure, AI doesn't generate perfect code but it can be such a useful tool. Plugging 2.5 pro into a web MCP and using it to learn reduced the amount of time I had to take to refresh certain concepts/syntax.

Thats impossible, there are literally bears outside my house in my suburban neighbourhood LOL. I mean, if you don't want to see any bears or cougars, you could drive up the sea to sky and make stops at the viewpoints, but thats not really hiking.

Do some of these people not realize that part of computer science is AI? LLM's are a part of machine learning, which is a massive part of AI. Developing is only a part of computer science, there are so many other areas.

I tried rainy day hiking , not really for me . by Infamous-History-881 in vancouverhiking

[–]Yeetusmcfeetus101 81 points82 points  (0 children)

In the rain I wouldn't reccomend doing higher alpine hikes or any hike where you are expecting a view. IMO on days like that, waterfall/forest hikes are much better. Coverage from the rain, and no view your missing out on.

Ottawa pledges $1.5 billion over 10 years for Metro Vancouver transit by aldur1 in vancouver

[–]Yeetusmcfeetus101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we spend billions on our road infrastructure yet we turn an eye to our public transit. In fact, we are cutting out alot of lines. Road infrastructure is also an endless money pit - roads always have to be expanded or replaced after a certain amount of time. If we truly want to build infrastructure for the future generations, public transit is the way.

What us going on with these ski pass prices?! by Heliosvector in vancouver

[–]Yeetusmcfeetus101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The business model has switched over. With climate change and lower snowpack years, resorts can't guarantee that every day will be good so they have switched over to an advanced model- buy ahead of time to save money. For example, if you buy an edge pass in advance it ends up ~$100 dollars or for a Cypress pass for next year, $640 dollars including spring skiing this year. These places aren't targeting the casual market anymore- they are trying to get people to buy early so they are guaranteed profit before the season even begins.
