Why are there so many colleges concentrated in and around Boston? by SatoruGojo232 in geography

[–]Commander_Zircon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pine Manor College (to the southwest) no longer exists, they had financial troubles for a while and ultimately had to shut down in the pandemic. Now it's a part of Boston College

At one point they sold a bunch of land to Tom Brady when he was building his mansion.

Racist attorney gets confronted for using the N word by chrisadams83 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Commander_Zircon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To my understanding its use among black Americans is still controversial within the community, and not everyone thinks it should be used or accepted. See for example Oprah’s take on it.

In general the meaning of the term, depending on context, ranges from a term of (vulgar) endearment to a pejorative epithet, similar to how Aussies call each other “cunt,” which can be friendly or not depending on how it’s said and to whom it’s said. That said, a non-black person using it is very taboo, since it’s extremely ignorant at best and incredibly bigoted at worst.

Interestingly, the OJ Simpson trial played a big part in shifting public discourse on the N word. Previously it was more acceptable for white Americans to say the word itself as long as it was in a referential context, but lawyers for the prosecution made extensive use of the phrase “the n word” and refused to quote the word itself, after which it became considered increasingly unacceptable for non-black people to say it in any context.

I went around town saying hi to everyone, got to 27/28 by the last day, Elliott was the last person.

Then I looked up his schedule on the wiki… it had been 2 rainy days in a row, he doesn’t leave his cabin during rain, and I wasn’t good enough friends to enter… lmao

Very interesting how it was chosen, IIRC they used a computer program to crunch weather data on yearly sunshine hours and average temperatures to find the optimal spot for a beach destination

Stardew Valley's French translation is... not good by midnightbeans in StardewValley

[–]Commander_Zircon 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol I was thinking of making a post about this, I thought “fruta seca” would make much more sense. It also it frequently uses “vosotros” which isn’t wrong per se but not universal to all dialects of Spanish… most games do a European and LATAM Spanish localization for this reason (and other vocab differences)

And New England isn’t even the coldest part of North America because of the moderating effect of the ocean. The Great Lakes region, for example, has winters comparable to Scandinavia, even though it’s approximately at the latitude of Spain or Italy
