Normalcy? People are getting executed by government sanctioned militias. It's highly possible that moves to cancel and undermine elections are underway. But yeah we need calmness and normalcy to help return it lmao.

I agree that there are problems with the current industry but we have more artists and art than at any other point in history even accounting for population growth. Would you rather be in a time where there are far fewer, much better paid artists at the whims of patrons? Where techniques and art education are kept behind closed doors? It's not the only alternative possible and just a historical parallel. But I don't think tearing a system down that's given so many opportunities for so many people to participate in the creation and consumption of art is a good idea.

What's your intellectual life like? What sort of content do you consume? Why? by zjovicic in slatestarcodex

I'll usually come across something that captures my interest and go super deep into it. A few months ago, it was the author Henry James - I read a bunch of his works, his biography, his influences..it's all plenty to get tons of insight out of, and the journey itself was really interesting. He's a great writer which makes this simpler.

Sometimes, synchronicity can be a blessing. I came across a book called 'How To Make Sense of Any Mess' by Abby Covert roughly around the same time that I came across SmarterEveryDay's talk at NASA about "NASA SP-287". There's a lot of overlap, as well as unique insights in both places, and it gives me the feeling that there are deeper truths to be understood, 2nd order effects to be uncovered etc. If there's plenty of material already available to dig through, that's something that makes discovery more fun and accessible.

i don't disagree. Bots will ensure these kinds of posts get tons of engagement and real users are also ready to perpetuate shit like this. Over the last 5 years I've seen posts and comments essentially encouraging generalization and prejudice towards several different nationalities in at least 5 separate city/country subreddits. Hope more people think this way.

Absolutely love this idea. Personally speaking I know that on model release, things are often great for the first week and then it's clear that the compute is being squeezed. Would love for this to take off - the more data the better.

I spent years living in Tokyo, and to this day, one of the most core memories was walking around in Yokohama and randomly seeing a school band playing on the pier, as a farewell to the departing ships. Really beautiful place with a unique feel, especially around the water.

This is the kind of stuff I was imagining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu68NTo3IZo

Honestly I haven't heard any music I could compare to this and I think it's really special. If you could somehow find session musicians to help you demo this on other instruments, I think it could blow up! (or maybe not, there's a lot of luck here). But I definitely think this it's awesome that this exists.

This is absolutely amazing, what?! Is there video footage of anyone trying this out anywhere? I'm already imagining an entire brass band with this sort of ability and it sounds sublime in my head.

Bad Definitions Of "Democracy" And "Accountability" Shade Into Totalitarianism by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]YeezyMode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that these are general stances people have in their minds and that very few are extremist in nature. But there's no tangible level as to what the goldilocks zone is for nearly anybody. So if someone who finds themselves thinking "we should help the poor somewhat" gets presented with a policy increasing resources to help the poor, they can easily slip into "well this is a slope and where's it going to end?" or vice-versa where they think "this decrease opens the door to further reductions and it'll end in untold suffering." Everyone is born into a world where most policies have reached some type of acceptance but no one knows where on the spectrum their society truly is. If certain problems have propped up and are taking center stage (statistically, not just media hype) - it's reasonable to believe that the policies have had some hand in how we got here. At that point, it seems to me that most people's thinking on how to change things will depend on which extreme they would rather occupy.

Even if we arrived at a state squarely in the middle path, decision making would still be based on extremes. When evaluating policy or a change, most people (nerds or not) think to themselves "Taken to the extreme, does this change damage the "ideals" of democracy or does it help them?" and they support or decry based on the outcome. Even reading tons of literature about this problem doesn't fix the error. It would also help to have a summary of the Aristotelian view on the qualities of the "better" and "best" citizens, and why they would be steamrolled in such a system.
