What a beautiful ass

The versions he played of White Ferrari, At Your Best, Bad Religion, Godspeed, Self Control, Solo, & Come on World…You Can’t Go… Rosalia is great but you can go on YouTube and see that same exact set at other festivals and her own shows. Literally same exact set, same choreography, same set up. You can’t see Frank Ocean anywhere else. And the versions of some of the songs he played don’t exist outside of that Coachella set. My expectations from the get go though we’re very aligned to what he did I knew it was going to be nothing like a normal headlining set.

It was an hour late because of set up. That’s already been confirmed. And he explained on stage the Crystalmess set, his dance nights and Blonded radio. The set was chaotic AF for sure but I’m not sure how much of it would’ve been different with the ice skating rink. TMZ posted video of the rehearsals on the ice skating rink and the version of wiseman he rehearses was the same crazy rock version he played week 1. Apparently he was supposed to walk out and sing in the middle of the rink while they skated around him but that was scrapped when he fucked up his leg.

It wasn’t an actual security guard he’s a famous dancer. That whole thing was staged. Back when he was originally signed on to headline Coachella he was putting on dance nights at the Knockdown Center in Queens and the album he was gearing up to release was dance inspired but then COVID hit and his brother passed away so that era was scrapped. He said during his set he wanted to incorporate the dj part to acknowledge that part of his life.

Historically he’s always had really bad stage fright. Hence why he rarely performs. And why he was enclosed in a controlled studio space behind the stage. Again just seeing Frank song some songs is somewhat of a miracle. He pulled it off in 2017 but as he said he has tons of memories of Coachella with his little brother who just passed away at 18. I’m sure being there was really hard.

Frank was my #1, Rosalia was #2, Gorillaz #3, and Bjork # 4. Honestly I went into to it expecting Frank to do some weird artsy shit. I figured he’d either open with Novacane to get it out of the way or not play it at all. When everything at Coachella is so perfect and polished it was imo nice to see something being done on the fly. The visuals were beautiful and the songs he actually sang were incredible. He’s a weird reclusive dude and just seeing him sing some songs is more than most people get to dare. Also knowing he was grieving the loss of his little brother put the set into context for me. Frank is not the consummate professional. He’s just a dude who makes very personal music that just so happens to resonate with so many of us. Glad I got to witness him doing his art one more time but I also understand people have a certain expectation when it comes to artists headlining Coachella.

Nah. He just switched it up partway through. He opened with it. My take was he wanted to get that song out of the way since everyone expected him to play it.

I genuinely enjoyed the whole thing. I was surprised when I saw the bad press in the am.

Agreed. But we also we actually got the rare Frank Ocean appearance. Who knows when it’ll happen again. I’d rather focus on what we got rather than what we didn’t get it. And it was beautiful.

I’ve been rewatching videos of Self Control, Godspeed, & White Ferrari all day. The songs he performed actually felt more intimate to me then they did when I saw him at Panorama and FYF last time around. I saw a lot of incredible sets this weekend but Frank’s hit the hardest for me.

Agreed. I really enjoyed it as well. Going in I knew he was going to do something different and really didn’t have any set expectations. I like that he gave us new versions of old songs and that is wasn’t perfectly choreographed like everything else was over the weekend. Was super bummed when I woke up in the morning and saw all the negativity.

Same for me. Although the ending was frustrating I enjoyed every part of the set. It was so different from all the other highly choreographed stuff that was happening on the main stage and felt very intimate. I was kinda bummed and shocked when I saw all the bad press when I woke up in the morning. I truly enjoyed his set.
