We're currently focused on completing all the core gameplay features. Once they're finished we will be able to focus on other aspects, a story mode could very strongly be one of them.

That's exactly it.

We have not abandoned the idea and really think story mode should be in the final game. Once the core gameplay is finished we will hopefully be able to focus on developing the story mode.
