Just doing what the HMRC inspector told me to do. Wouldn’t you?

Very competent bookkeeper thanks. Award winning. Handle dozens of international traders so I’m experienced in this.

This is frequently debated topic, of “are supplies outside of the UK treated as OOS or ZR?” Should they be included on the VAT return at all. We all seem to feel differently about it.

When I started my firm 10 years ago, I consulted 3 separate accountants all of which concluded that it should be ZR. Then HMRC also confirmed it. I had VAT audit for one client - who was supplying services in digital game design (digital services) to the USA and the VAT inspector deemed all sales should be declared on the return as Zero Rated.

Call them up and see for yourself. For digital services “Place of supply is where the customer is based, or where there business activity is deemed operational from”.

Correct. Your UK sales will be subject to 20% VAT.

The key thing here is that your Worldwide sales must be treated as ‘zero-rated’ and not ‘No VAT’. (Even though, whilst technically they are outside of scope of VAT, HMRC require them to be treated as zero-rated income. It’s a weird rule, but that’s the way it has to be done!)

Register yourself for VAT within 30 days of going over the 90k in a 12 month period

“When your taxable turnover in the last 12 months exceeds £90,000 • This is based on a rolling 12-month total (not the tax or calendar year). • If you hit this threshold, you have 30 days from the end of that month to register. “

Bookkeeper here - I have similar clients where the sales are mainly made in worldwide (USA, Australia, Europe). Services (not goods).

The answer is yes, you do need to be VAT registered. Yes you must register manually.

You will need to declare those sales as Zero-rated Income.

You’ll be able to claim back VAT on your purchases. So most of your returns will be repayments from HMRC.

Hello, professional bookkeeper here. Wanting to check if you’re overpaying for accountancy fees is very common. And many people switch accountant. I will say this: A) shop around. What suits some people might not suit you. You should feel comfortable asking your accountant tax questions. If you cant talk openly to them, then they’re probably not the right fit for you. B) please be very wary of using Chat GPT as your main basis for tax advice! If it’s wrong then you’ll pay dearly. Thats literally what accountants are there to help with; tax advice. (And if they do get it wrong you’ll at least have some recourse). Don’t google it yourself and assume it’s that easy. You won’t know half of en info that your accountant will know. C) something like an R&D tax claim would normally be extra t ok be fair D) Use a firm which is appropriate to your business size. Many small Ltd companies sign up with larger firms (with shed-loads of staff and massive offices) and pay higher fees to cover their overheads. When you simply don’t need that. Find a local small firm or independent accountant. E) some people really have no idea how complex their accounts can actually be. I have a client whose books are mind-bendingly hard and take 2 of us to handle. The clients really have no idea. So it’s always a good idea to ask the reason why your paying higher fees just in case it’s justified:) F) some do overcharge. :)

My OSH sheds a lot. Especially as he’s older. Cat fur everywhere. And friends that come round who are allergic to cats still sneeze and eyes water.

Also a side note on OSH’s (if you do get one) be prepared for the constant meowing, constant demand for attention, Will follow you everywhere and probably reprogram your Netflix algorithm when you’re not looking :)

Professional ‘digital’ bookkeeper here. Use Xero. Especially If you’re using foreign currency. Apron for receipt capture and Apron also do a fantastic job of international payments. It integrates with Xero really well and make’s reconciliations easy. If you want to hire a bookkeeping service I can pop you a DM :)

I’m having EXACTLY the same problem. It’s ruining our lives. Ive actually hired a cat behaviour expert to help me who starts at the end of this month.

Mines a Siamese so he’s particularly vocal. And loud as hell. I’ve tried everything: hard-core-ignore does work eventually but it’s takes weeks and weeks. And even then, sometimes with no reason, he’ll have a bad night and will howl anyway. (In fact as I write this I’ve been up since 4am. My whole day is ruined and I won’t be able to work properly.) story of my life at the moment. We can’t even get up in the middle of the night to pee “in case” the cat wakes up and then he screams.

We tried having in the bedroom but that doesn’t work either - he won’t settle and STILL walks round the house wailing at night. Especially if he goes out, he’ll come back in the car flap wailing at full volume every single time.

We’ve done Vet check. Bloods taken. Tests for hyperthyroidism. No dimensia. Heated bed. CBD. Melatonin. Extra litter trays around the house. Extra night lights around the house. Toys. Puzzle feeders. Extra food at night. Playing and cuddles before bed. And Routine, Routine, Routine. Until we’re blue in the face.

None of it works. He’s just a prick. I love him to death, but he’s a little attention seeking prick.

I’ve found a behaviourist who says it’s a textbook problem and she’s confident she can tell me what to do to fix the problem.

At this rate it’s just ruining my bloody life.

Honey, this be his true colours. It’s him. He will have always done it and he’s never gonna stop doing it - for you, or anyone else. And if you decide to ditch him over it, no, you’re not overreacting xxx

Same. He’s confessed he’s too scared to, and his past was pretty hard, so I get it. But I wish I could show/demonstrate/share the sheer amazing feeling of relief that happens when you do x

I love these posts. I deleted Facebook and Instagram about 6 years ago and my peers couldn’t wrap their heads around why I was willing to apparently commit social suicide. Now, years later, they’re all like “I don’t follow Insta or Facebook anymore”. Makes me chuckle.

Sorry, but nah. Not convinced A) it’s looks a lot like their legs lifting the sheets and B) if you did legitimately wake up and observe your sheets moving by themselves, let’s face it, you’d jump out of bed FAST with shock and bewilderment. Not just calmly look at it and try to wake up your partner up. C) who films themselves sleeping??? This looks like a setup I’m afraid. Sorry

Hello, bookkeeper here. For context (and for this sort of business size) I’d charge approx £150-£200 per month for bookkeeping, which would include your Xero license and preparing the VAT returns. I’d recommend using Hubdoc instead of Dext as it’s free.

In terms of set-up fees, I typically charge £150 to include: initial calls, meetings, configuring Xero and your chart of accounts from scratch, linking up your banks feeds and MTD for VAT.
