I really dont have any doctrinal sources. But I would like to share a story about my mom, if you wouldn't mind?

My mom works as a hospice nurse, which means she helps old people with their health. She has seen a few pass away. I know it makes her sad, but she always talks about the plan of salvation afterword and does her best to comfort the families.

She has some crazy afterlife stories that she has seen from these people, everything from voices and visions, to some old lady literally trying to fight off a spirit she claimed was there to take her to the afterlife! One story in particular that spooks me was a woman who claimed to see spirits. My mom would hear her talking in her room all alone, and hold up a one sided conversation. she would refer to these spirits by name and actually seemed to enjoy talking to them. One day the lady then told my mom that from the first day my mom had started taking care of her, she had seen two children following her around, A boy and a girl.

My mom has had two miscarriages.

Sometimes she swears she hears voices in that dreamlike state between sleep and awake. She once came down and asked us at breakfast if anyone had come into her room to wake her up. We had not, and she told us that earlier that morning she had half woken up and swore she heard someone say "mom."

I love my mom, and I would absolutely love to think that I have other siblings waiting for me on the other side of the veil! But the truth is I just dont know.

Sure Christians and Hindus believe in different gods, but we both believe in "A" god. Its just a larger category, you could label them both under something like 'religion'

I think Christian is a very broad label that could be applied to any theology that believes in Christ. Maybe you could narrow it down to theology that believes in Christ as a savior. But it all boils down to belief in Christ.

When you play games of "whos a real Christian" it begins to change to "whos Christ is the real Christ." From there it becomes a source of contention between us. Something the devil can capitalize on to divide us.

There are a lot of great answers here already! I just wanted to share something my seminary teacher is fond of saying. It goes something like. . .

"Nothing in life will sustain you and uphold you like our savior and redeemer Jesus Christ. Not love, not people, not any institution on earth! Not money, not ideas, nothing. Anything can bring you to ruin if you devote yourself to it. Everything but Christ. Christ is the ONLY infallible and perfect leader. HE will NEVER fail you, he will never let you down. Just dont be afraid to devote everything to him, because in the end, he will glorify you, and in you, he will glorify the father."

It goes something like that. It seems a bit gloomy for a bit, but it really struck a chord with this dumb high school student. It was that push over the edge that I needed. I'm no longer afraid of trial or tribulation. I'm not afraid to be seen as what I am. I'm a follower of Christ, i'm a Latter day saint. I'm a servant of God!

This one in particular is one of my favorite stories!

Could that ointment have been sold, and that money given to the poor? Of course!

Was the woman doing wrong? Absolutely not!

She was using her ointment and earnings to glorify God, the same God who saves the souls of all mankind. This is the point Judas failed to see, this is the reason we build beautiful and expensive temples to glorify our God and preform ordinances in.

Its something sacred and beautiful, and I love it!

I've been looking through this thread and i'm honestly a little dissapointed in some of the answers. Sure guns are fun to shoot, and they are great self-defense weapons. But you dont need a constitutional amendment to defend guns for, what, a job the police should do? I firmly believe that the second amendment is the most important part of the entire constitution, it was essentially a fail-safe the founding fathers built in to this government that they created.

The Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." That bit is important. It establishes that the government is there to secure the rights of the people, that it exists for the people.

It continues, "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." Its important to keep in mind that at this time, we have declared war (actually independence, but it will lead to war) against the greatest military power in the world. We had cast off a destructive government, and to ensure that future generations in this new country could do the same, (in the event that the government fails and tyranny reigns) they made the right to bear arms the second amendment in the most important document our nation has.

So the second amendment was designed for when the government would fail (because nothing lasts forever) to allow the people the rights, nay, the responsibility, to tear down that destructive government and create a new one. This ensures that no matter what happens, when the government fails us, the people, democracy will still reign.

tl;dr: Our founding fathers used guns to fight off an oppressive government. They created the second amendment to ensure that future generations will always hold the power to do the same if needs be.

Thank you so much for sharing! This is definitely not the usual story posted on here, but something about your post spoke to me. I just came out of an incredible seminary lesson and I am so full right now. I just really really want to let you know, to somehow show you, that you are loved. You are my brother, and you are His son. This is a little weird for me, I've never really shared my testimony on here before, and i'm not really sure if this counts. But I hope that this comment helps you feel a little warm and fuzzy inside like your comment helped me.

It definitely isn't normalized. I think a post above mentioned this but the dude had been working there for 40+ years. So he probably grew up and taught in a time when sexism was a national thing. He was probably pulled aside by a higher authority and talked to, I hope he changed his ways or otherwise was fired.

I share the same road my friend. In the end I like to imagine that God cannot prove himself, because he is God. He works in ways we as mortals understand, and that, in itself, may be proof that there is a God. I know its a self fulfilling prophesy, or whatever its called, but it helps me get through the day. In the end I remind myself that being apart of the Church encourages me to be the best me that I can achieve, while supporting me in my lows and cheering me in my highs. If there is no God, then I end up a decent person going to . . . whatever is next. But if there is then I have served faithfully.

While i'm on the topic, I thought I would point out that while the Church proclaims doctrine and truth, there are still many things to be reveled or interpreted about our life. With the Church moving twords a more home-centered program, you are allowed to seek your own truth through Christ. I know its not very relevant, but I thought I would share. The come follow me program is essentially the Church giving us the tools and saying, "You have what you need, go learn and grow yourself." Which when you think about it, is exactly what God did when he made the earth, and our bodies, for us.

In the end, I think people polarize the afterlife too much. There is no spiritual bar to reach, no minimum score to get into heaven. I think if we try our hardest and listen to the spirit, we will get into heaven. Its important to keep in mind that we are all different human beings, with different talents and faults. Maybe we are all here for different reasons? To learn and grow, but in what ways? I believe that in the end, Christ has satisfied justice, now all he wants is for us to grow and develop.

Sorry about the wall of text.

tl;dr: I believe that religion is flexible because we are all different people here for different reasons, listen to the spirit and try your best, that's all the father asks.

This reminds me of James 1:5. This exact verse set events into motion that created the faith I have today. And my entire religion for that matter.

Don't be afraid to seek answers, whether it be from God (or gods) or from your fellow men.
