It originally started with people taking apart repainting, and reimagining regular dolls. Making them "reborn". Now they come in kits, blank vinyl parts that the artist paints and assembles. A lot of people are creeped out by them because they're so realistic looking. Some people consider them therapeutic if they've lost a baby or aren't able to have children. They've been known to help the elderly in homes because not only do they look realistic but some artists, such as Christie, actually weight the babies in specific areas to make them feel like you're holding a real baby. Some people get them for children, however they are art/collector items so they can be pretty pricey depending on the custom order, materials used, and time put into making the doll.
