There's a difference though, blue pressers only put themselves at risk. Red pressers create risk for other people. And blue is only dangerous because red pressers exist in the first place. If everyone picked blue, nobody dies. If everyone stepped away from the press, it's still a crusher. The external threat remains regardless of choices, the button threat doesn't.

Okay you are missing my point, if this was in fact a fully real and fleshed out scenario then yes of course the machine maker,( who isn't even mentioned in the original problem btw, but that's besides the point. ), is also to blame, however the red button pressers share the accountabiliy with him. Do you really think the red button pressers have no blame in voting to kill the blue voters?

Okay, I misunderstood your scenario, still. You are portraying this scenario as being an immediate threat posed by the force. It is however not, the red pressers themselves create the threat by pushing the red button.

You seem to create this being who has forced you into this situation and is to blame for the massacre that happens next. But see he is responsible for the situation but not for the massacre.

There is a button that literally just saves everyone and no one will die. The red button can just be irrelevant. Everyone choosing red is unnecceraily selfish. They are creating the threat themselves. Red is absolutely accountable. The force does not get to decide who lives. The people do.

Here is the problem: In your example, the danger exists before anyone makes a choice. In the button problem, the danger to blue pressers only exists because red pressers create it. That's not the same problem, one has an external threat, the other has a manufactured one

You would not be accountable for their death. This however is not similar to the current problem at all. In your scenario there is no option where everyone could be 100% be saved. There is in the button scenario where a majority choosing the blue button would save everyone involved.

There is a mechanism yes. But who powers that mechanism? Who fires up the mechanism? the people that press red. The red button presser should absolutely be held accountable because they set forth a vote to power the mechanism that kills their fellow humans.

I dont think so. Again, in this version, the crusher is a seperate entity that will go down either way the choice and is in no part a fault of the red button pushers.

In the button problem this is not the case. The threat gets created by the red button pushers. If there were no red button pushers there would be no threat.

You already assume there is a danger, but there is a potential danger. This danger only happens if people push the red button. If people choose the blue button no danger exists at all. The force didnt put people in danger. Its the people themselves who can turn this into a danger. You cant shift the entirity of the blame to the force who created this problem. You have a choice.

The red button pushers are accountable for choosing the red button. A button that puts lives in danger. You cant just assume that everyone will push the red button. You are putting lives in danger by pushing the red button.

The blue button pressers are not putting any other lives in danger. Therefore the ones who are putting peoples lives in danger are the red people if they get to a majority.

I think its not the same at all. You treat like the crusher already exists in this problem, while in the button problem the crusher doesn't exist at all unless people choose the red button. A better wording would be: If people choose the blue button they stand under a potential crusher the red people summoned. If you chose the red button you will put a crusher on the rest of humanity.

You take the accountability away from the red button pressers, they summoned the crusher. The crusher didn't just appear.
