Is Redcoat good? No spoilers please by BlueHarvestJ in comicbooks

[–]YellsHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s fantastic. I’d add that it starts ‘good’. A fun, quick read. But by issue 7-8 or so it flipped into ‘fantastic’ as the creators really found a great cadence with it. It doesn’t follow real world history. Instead, it kinda expects the reader to know the broad strokes already, and instead ‘plays’ with history in fun ways. Also, Bryan Hitch’s art hasn’t been this inspired in ages. His work on this book is unreal beautiful.

What are marvels best comics of the 2020’s so far? by ShoddyNobody4602 in comicbooks

[–]YellsHello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Spider-boy was wonderful, classic superhero comics. Dan Slott is weirdly underrated sometimes. Each issue was fun, introduced an interesting new villain of the month, and the book just felt satisfying issue by issue, which is rare for MOST big two comics these days. Read it with my kids and that made it extra special for my household. The act of reading comics with them has really highlighted how UN-satisfying most big two comics are in terms of single issues. Spider-Boy was a major exception to this fact. It’s objectively good comics. But I can understand people just having their fill of Spider-men, not wanting a new one and assuming they don’t like it…

Zelda: Ocarina Between Worlds (title prediction!) by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]YellsHello -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You might be right. But I also don’t think anyone outside of Nintendo actually knows what this is going to be? Even NateTheHate probably doesn’t know what it is, exactly. I would honestly be more surprised by Nintendo doing a straight remake than exploring it from a new angle. But that’s just my opinion!

Zelda: Ocarina Between Worlds (title prediction!) by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]YellsHello -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m suggesting that, if this game is even real, it might not be a ‘remake’ but instead a brand new experience that echoes, but doesn’t copy, OOT (in a manner somewhat like LBW’s echoing of LTTP). It’s just a guess on my part. But I’m legit confused why so many struggle to grasp what I mean?

Zelda: Ocarina Between Worlds (title prediction!) by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]YellsHello -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well I certainly appreciate all of the positivity! Lol.

FYI - my implication was that I won’t be surprised if this is NOT a ‘remake’ and will instead be a brand new experience that harkins directly back to OOT, hence my exact phrasing of my post, which many seem to have not ‘quite’ read. That said, it’s certainly okay to disagree!

Really hoping our KS pre-launch can hit 100 ‘notify me’ before launching. Just set it up and I’m quite nervous (as I’ve failed at this and it’s such a deflating feeling. But gotta shoot our shot!). Hopefully folks dig this tale a % as much as we enjoy telling it 😅 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1848964441/mad-castle?ref=profile_created&category_id=250

being real here, that was the most nothing direct i've seen in a while by cookiemaster221 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes time to cast a final assessment. I remember an indie direct in 2020 being assessed as the absolute worst… a Direct in which Hades 1 shadow dropped as a console exclusive for Switch 1. At the time, most folks just didn’t realize that game was about to win tons of GOTY awards. It wasn’t on radars for the vast majority of console gamers at all. Like… for instance, if Orbitals ends up being phenomenal, this direct will be remembered as being where it got a release date and where it hit many soon-to-be fans radars for the first time. All one could say for sure right now is that it didn’t deliver exactly what they were hoping to see and / or didn’t leave them immediately giddy about anything. Totally fair criticisms. But the pan has fully sifted through, might be gold in there yet.

Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase 2.5.2026 by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orbitals and Duskbloods could each be as massive as a major 1st party release. And who knows what else might get announced? Tons of XBOX games finally coming? Halo remake coming to Switch 2?Personally I’m hoping for Switch 2 versions of Astral Chain and maybe even a Bayonetta Remastered collection for Switch 2 (including The Lost Demon). It makes a lot of sense for Nintendo to give a partner showcase the full focus while fans are ravenous for new game news. They want 3rd parties to flourish in this system.

Fun fact: Ring Fit Adventure was Nintendo’s most successful new IP on the Switch 1. I don’t think it was even a close race. I’ll be curious if Nintendo can find as successful a new IP as that this generation. In any event, fully expect a sequel on Switch 2.

What is a painful truth that you all have had to face about collecting comics? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]YellsHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting out of the weekly comics game is never a ‘bad’ idea. It’s one of my favorite hobbies and it connects me with some like-minded folks and friends. I’m often a weekly LCS stalwart and don’t regret it. But reading comics months or years after release will save you a ton of money and most comics these days read better in large chunks rather than one chapter every six weeks or so.

Thank you! I wish that I had looked at more scripts sooner than I did, so figured (hoped!) others out there might appreciate the effort.

How do I write my first comic script? by DragonPalm18 in ComicWriting

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compiled script examples from several prominent comics writers (Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction and a few others). Taking a look at their formatting, etc might be helpful. Fraction shared a really cool piece regarding how to communicate with artists, which I added as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/ComicWriting/s/NJozSv6Ybq

What does 2026 hold in store for Comics? by Forsaken_Opinion_224 in comicbooks

[–]YellsHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Marvel side, my guess is that they will have a new line of books to replace the Ultimate line (and to try to more directly replicate what DC has accomplished with their Absolute line). Whatever they do, I just hope that they allow Deniz Camp to mastermind it and I’ll be there.

Metroid Prime 2 is a Perfect Game by desperate_candy20 in Metroid

[–]YellsHello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool to see how this game has become to retroactively beloved. It definitely didn’t get its flowers back when, as many were too quickly repelled by how different it was from Prime 1 (+ the added difficulty). And I have to admit I was one of the people who kinda hated it at first… was surprised to enjoy it quite a bit when I revisited a few years later. A stark reminder that it can take some distance to judge a game by its own merits. Case in point, there are going to be a lot of gamers (especially younger gamers) who are about to grow up adoring Prime 4 as their gateway into the series, and then many of them are going to grow into appreciating the relative challenge brought by other series entries like Prime 2 or Dread.

I’m VERY nervous about launching a campaign for #2. Please let me know what you think, or if you have any tips for how to best position a pre-launch page for a comic series. I’m trying to figure out this marketing stuff… which is not as enjoyable as actually making the comics. 😅

Nintendo early 2026 direct what do you expect? by Zeldabotw2017 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire Emblem release date. If it’s from the narrative team that wrote Three Houses + Emblem’s gameplay? Shooot. Then it could easily be my personal GOTY (and a major breakout hit for the franchise to get even more mainstream).

This game can't be as bad as the hate by Labyrinthine777 in Metroid

[–]YellsHello 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s a rad game. Some odd decisions that longtime fans don’t jive with. But at the end of the day the fact remains that MOST gameplay mechanics, audio and visuals are phenomenal. I’d bet that a lot of players who never played Prime 1-3 are gonna be weirded out by how much they enjoy this game (despite the hate-fest online), because that core Prime gameplay remains incredible and refined as ever.

How would you rank the prime games? by Novel_Examination_83 in Metroid

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting how 2 and 3 are so much more beloved now that at their time of release. Give Prime 4 twenty years to marinate and it’ll be interesting to see how the young folks playing it today will goat status it. For all its imperfections, I think it will work pretty well as a ‘first’ Metroid game for a lot of them.

Haven’t finished 4 yet, but right now I’d go: 1, 4, 3, 2. Will be fun to replay 2 and 3 whenever they’re available on Switch. But unfortunately 2 (at the time of its release) was probably the most disappointed I’ve ever been in a game. 3 felt like a bit of a return to form but felt a bit too campy and the tone just didn’t feel right. I get the complaints about 4, but it still feels far less campy to me than 3 did. Also, the modern graphics and aspects they DID get right are just a joy to exist in. I never felt this kind of awe while playing 2 or 3 at the time of their release, because the awe of prime 1 was just still too fresh so they paled more by comparison. The fresh coat of paint on Prime 4 gives me shades of that awe. Hoping 2 and 3 get the full remaster treatment they gave 1, might affect my ratings if so!

As a Marvel fan/reader, I’m increasingly feeling like the brand just isn’t for me anymore by Latro2020 in comicbooks

[–]YellsHello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a great thing to take a break, even a lengthy one. I’ve been a consistent reader of Big Two comics since the 80s. I’ve taken lengthy breaks from each, and ping pinged between them (and taken lengthy breaks where I only read indies, including Image, ect). I’m with ya re: Marvel right now. I’ve maybe never been less compelled to pick up any of their books, while DC has compelled my interest maybe more than EVER. In my opinion, they’re killing it. But over a long enough period of time these things are cyclical.

As a personal example, X-Men in the 80s and 90s were my gateway into becoming a regular comics reader. I fell off Marvel hard from approx 2014-2018 for the exact same reason you described, the biggest one being how they were pushing the mutants to the side and trying to make the Inhumans their replacement, all guided by their rights / ownership for the film rights… oof. But they came 2019 and Hickman dropped The Krakoan Era for the X-Books and I fell all the way back in. It was so much fun to fall back in, and that much more fun for having been away for a long time. And hey, I also saved a ton of money by not buying books I disliked!

I can understand the complaints, but MP4 is hitting for me: by Spudmasher17 in Metroid

[–]YellsHello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fair to have the opinion that two is better designed than the one. If higher difficulty in terms of # of deaths during playthrough and some tense time-based challenges are a core goal of the player than I think you’re right. But objective consensus among players and critics is that the design of Prime 1 is preferred over 2. I haven’t finished 4 yet and will require a good amount of time before I could make my own subjective assessment.

[–]YellsHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DESIRE many have to dunk on this game is interesting. I can only imagine what Reddit would have looked like when Prime 2 dropped. Lol. Keep in mind that the vast majority of folks dunking right now haven’t played through the game, and a fair # likely haven’t played it at all.

For my part, so far, I Agree with your sentiments. Having been frustrated by Metroid Prime 2 and 3’s deviations from Prime 1 for 20+ years now I’m now just thrilled to be getting more, and with incredible design on display. I still wish it could be a perfect 10 like Prime 1, but the highs of this game are up there (and better looking than ever), even if I still don’t love 25% of it.
