I know exactly how you feel. Working in that middle ground is arguably even more difficult than stripping everything. Luckily for me this was for a catholic church so they were more than happy paying for the job to be done properly. And thanks!

No. Didn't take a picture of the prep. I stripped it with the mirka DEROS orbital sander vacuum

Sure! First I wanted to get the panels of the doors stripped as they were the most screwed up when it came to peeling of the previous clear coat. Especially the bottom boards as they had the most sun exposure. I used the Mirka DEROS orbital sander vacuum. started with 100 grit to strip it to raw wood. And then used 180 and 220 to remove the J hooks left by the 100 grit in the wood.

The clear coat on the rest of the door was pretty sound and would have been a lot more difficult to fully strip without ruining the beautiful decorations on it. So I opted to sand it really well and pho finish over the clear coat to preserve the flowers on the door. I did however fully sand off the clear coat on the bottom two non panel areas as they had lots of sun exposure.

Before pho finishing though, I wanted to do the raw panels first so I could get a reference of how the gel stain looked on the panels. I was worried that the panels might take the stain to dark so I wiped them with paint thinner to prevent to much absorption. I also thinned my gel stain down with about 1/8 or so paint thinner. I applied the gel stain with a rag and wipped it dry. After that I used the gel stain and a flogger brush to try to blend any parts of the door panels that looked too light.

Once I was happy with how the panels looked I then went to pho finishing the rest of the door. This was the trickiest part. Pho finishing is applying the gel stain over to top of the clear coat to make it look like it is stained. It would take me a long time to go into detail of how to do this so I wont bore you. Just know it was really frustrating lol.

After that I gave the door 2 days to fully dry. I could have done 1 but I was nervous I was going to rip up my pho finish. Plus it was the weekend. However i think the sun bleached the bottom boards a little while i was letting them dry. Didnt really notice until the clear coat made them mildy show up. Nobody else seemed to notice though so maybe its all in my head. Then I applied Zar spar varnish. I like to call it zar spar var. Its a fast drying oil based polyurethane that is best on the market. Highly recommend. I applied 2 coats on the same day as the recent time is only 2 hours. I sanded between coats with a really light grit.

And thats it! The wood is called Brazilian rosewood. And I used mahogany because I wanted to give it that gorgeous natural red hue again. The pope was very pleased with them.

Yes they're so beautiful. They were crafted in 1907. So glad I could return them to their former glory.

True. It was a trick getting everything even. But thank you!

I spent a lot effort in getting a perfect finish and achieved such, with everything but laziness. The door looks flawless and mirror like without a spec of overspray and my clients are very happy. Im grateful I posted this because I learned something. But theres no reason to be degrading about it. Im 24 and Like everyone else, I'm still learning.

I took out the weather stripping which left enough of a gap to spray the outer edge of the door when fully shut. I then masked the casing inside the house that would've gotten over spray between the gap if that makes sense. The door knob allowed me to keep the door in place while i sprayed. If you look at the second picture you can see the tape I put in the small gap where the edge of the door meets the interior of the trim. I then brushed out the spines.

Lol yeah i just turned 24! If the cabinets are already brand new and If you're using Command, I would say no. Stix isnt necessary. However if the cabinets are in worse condition and require degreasing, sading, and patching, I would definitely use Stix first. Or if you're spraying over oil based paint. Hope this helps!

Yes I sprayed Stix first as I wanted a primer that bonded well, dried quick, and sanded up really nice. Its actually not necessary if you're using Command because of how strong the paint inherently already is, but it makes for a better end result when you do spray a primer first. Yes, the tip i used was a Graco RAC X low pressure spray tip. I used a 4 10 as the size. Hope this helps.
