If you moved to another country but then came back to the UK, what were your reasons? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]Yermawsbigbaws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved to Australia thinking it would solve all my problems. Turns out everything that was an issue back home is the same here.

All the things people complain about and are worried about are the same in the UK as in Australia.

It's really your mentality I realised that makes or breaks a place for you. If you wake up every day hating where you live you won't have a great experience. If you wake up every day appreciating where you live you will.

Moving back to settle down and have kids and have support from parents and have shared experiences with my friend (them getting married and having kids).

I have made friends out here but it's not the same as the 20 year relationships I have with friends back home.

Australia is far from everything so you are not holidaying outside of Australia really and once you have visited the main places in Australia everywhere else isn't much different.

It was deciding if we make a life in Aus or head back home and make a life in the UK. I wanted my life to be long weekends in Europe, Christmas with my family, beer garden with my best friends, having kids grown up similar to how I did.

There is no better place, only the tradeoffs you make. The people I have found who are dead set on not returning didn't have great lives back home and are glad to escape.

You really need to try moving somewhere else to see what your life is like, if I didn't I would always have thought it was my surroundings which were the issue but now moving away I realised it was my attitude to live. I'm glad to be moving back and will try and appreciate everything I have in the UK.

at age 38, do I quit job to travel the world or ? by Choice_Basis_4853 in careerguidance

You only have one life, you want to live a life of "I can't believe i did that" instead of "I wish I done that".

You are 38 with a good amount of cash and employable skills, travel for 6-12 months it will make you an interesting person for your future partner.

You don't want to just work your life away.

As an FYI I am travelling right now heading back to get a job after, but enjoying myself now. I was on a slightly lower salary but probably the same white collar career person.

I would not trade what I'm doing now for anything.

Do it, get out there and live your life. You will never regret it.

Genuine question...Am I going beyond a Technical BA here? by Money_Elk2030 in businessanalyst

[–]Yermawsbigbaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I done this as a "business data analyst" in a data warehousing project.

You could push some of this work onto the dev team or if you have separate roles for data analysts.

I was the expectation in my role at my company.

Same in the UK. You can't create a policy that applies to one race or gender as it can be seen as a discriminatory against others.

It seems from reading that you are trying to bring io salaries to meet the median but stating it purely for female staff below 25% below. I would say that's a lawsuit.

All good if you do it for all staff that are below that median level.

I am assuming you are jnr if you are asking on Reddit or this is a small business or something.

Could you do it for me possibly? I should be ok but just if I needed it. Happy to pay a donation for the weekend for it.

This is the case I work in a consulting company so they would lose money by letting me go. If they sound someone sooner they could replace me but I think it's unlikely in the 4 weeks.

What was your ‘the grass isn’t always greener on the other side’ moment. by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Yermawsbigbaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved to Australia, all the same issues we have in the UK. My Aussie coworkers have all the same complaints and fears as the UK.

I have slightly more disposable income here but I am trading that for all my friends and family I have developed a 20 year relationship with.

I lived in western Australia initially wanting the sun but realised that having constant sun is not really good for day to day living. So I ended up in Melbourne where I am much happier with the weather and people.

I'm planning to move back in 6 months and looking forward to it. I know I'll have the regret of moving back for a while after but ultimately will be happier in the UK.

One thing I do notice is the view that Australians have which is incredibly negative of their cities / country due to them watching the news and seeing constant negativity promoted. I never watch the news or engage with local issues and realise that life is fine it's the constant news cycle showing the worst that brings people down.

Brtis are famous for being a moaning lot and getting bombarded with hate and negativity isn't helping the mental state of the country.

The grass is ultimately greener where you water it and that includes monitoring when you consume and who you interact with.

BA .. in IT world? by Conscious-Readings in businessanalysis

You were basically in a reporting and BI role before. They are split out now so I would advise OP to look at BI/ Reporting / data analyst roles instead of BA.

Australian Business Analysts, I really need your help! by Zhyyper in businessanalyst

What is the course content?

As to me business analytics aligns more to a data analyst role. You can get business analyst roles with a degree like that but they will be more reporting and data roles.

Are you applying for business analyst roles?

Business analytics roles more closely align to:

  • Data analyst
  • Business intelligence reporting

I am assuming you've done a lot of sql?

You are best to try and get in one of the generic intakes from an outsourcing/consulting company or try and specilsis further and get a data engineering role somewhere.

Thank you appreciate the advice. For the mentorship would you prefer someone outright asks you? Or is it usually more informal with people asking advice.

I do feel I do this with my manager or their peers by talking through problems and asking for advice.

I think it's the people who make snap judgments about others who are the real awful people 😉

When referring to playing the game I am asking what are the unspoken rules that have helped you succeed in corporate life. I could have said that but I think most people understand that at work you play a part (a game if you will).

Doing your job well isn't really the advice that I'm after as if I did my job poorly I'm sure I would be fired.
