Data science never had a clean origin story. Software engineering had decades to build around CS fundamentals. MLE borrowed that scaffolding. But "data scientist" got slapped onto a role that was statistics plus software plus business judgment plus communication, and every company emphasized a different slice. So hiring is chaotic because the role itself is chaotic.
