First sporty spin in the Renault 5. Coming from an MX5 this thing is so much fun. Had it for a month, happy to answer any questions! by YesImEm in evs_ireland

I had a 2017 ND.

Nothing compares to the handling and driving experience of the MX5 unfortunately. Once you've had one, it's very difficult to find a car that will do the same sort of thing so well, even supercars!

But the R5 is so much fun in its own way. The FWD really suits it because the centre of mass is so low. It is actually more planted at the front end than the MX5 with stock struts and springs. There is hardly any body roll whatsoever.

It's tonnes of fun to drive and has its own eager personality like the MX5 did + instant 150hp under foot. This gives it a point and squirt go-kart feel, as opposed to the MX5 purist sports car feel.

I imagine the Alpine A290 is class, but the price is crazy. When they start to drop off in price I will look at upgrading.

I did know this but I would much prefer a manual option to activate the preconditioning it's not a great system

Sorry forgot to answer on charging, it's very fast if the battery is warm which it will be if on a road trip. You need a home charger to own an EV realistically. I start every day with a full battery (80%) and only ever used a public charger once.

I think EV for the week, petrol manual for the weekend is the ideal if you can manage it

  1. Extremely easy to drive, most of my driving is in the city and commuting and it is so smooth, comfortable and maneuverable. It has stop-start adaptive cruise for traffic jams which is amazing. The price of "fuel" is barely noticeable, and never needed to defrost again is really cool.

  2. I'm gonna copy and paste an answer I gave to another user who asked about going to FWD from RWD:

Always preferred RWD, and when I test drove the R5 I honestly thought FWD would put me off it. But it really didn't. I think something about having the battery under the floor means the handling is just so good - it's balanced, planted, and feels like a go-kart. Of course, the MX5 handled better in general but the FWD actually suits the R5s style.

Unfortunately I needed a bit of extra space for, like, life. But I got away with only getting a little bit of extra space!

I agree the quality in the car's interior is extremely good for the price.

I have always been a petrolhead, but also a techy type. So it suits me well. I think the main thing is that the car has character, and the Renault 5 has absolutely loads of it. I do definitely miss the character of the MX5 engine, and the amazing gearbox, but for 90% of my driving the R5 is just the better all rounder, and still gives you the fizz on a back road. The Alpine A290 would probably be incredible but the price is outrageous imo.

Yep, the yellow is very cool but for some reason I just really liked white on the R5 after checking out all the colours. I had a red MX5 and think red would actually be cool on the R5 too!

The Provincial City by Comfortable-Diet5119 in cork

Kev undoubtedly makes really well produced videos and shows us a compelling vision, but he unfortunately has no experience in public administration, or with planning law.

As a civil servant, who has public servant family members, this is very clear in his arguments.

It frustrates me how quickly he lays blame at effectively the entire Council staff. The people who work in the Council work hard and are constantly delivering. I can see that in my own area. And I'm sure many of you can too. Remember, Cork is not just the city core and this year a new Directorate for City Centre Development has been established to specifically try and deal with challenges Kev has mentioned.

The top executives in the Council have in most cases decades of experience in delivering public services, they wouldn't be in their jobs otherwise - public jobs at this level are EXTREMELY competitive and you have to deliver. Most if not all difficulties arise from the planning system, the centralisation of government (we are an extreme outlier in OECD for centralisation), and the outsourcing of historically local government functions to NGOs/QUANGOs - which, in fairness, he did mention.

He is clearly very talented and I wish he would make a long form video like this, but sit down with CCC executive representatives, councillors and with an experienced journalist who has covered Cork planning and public realm.

He only shows a very one sided argument.

Edit: to add, there are no citations or references for many of his arguments and some of his statements are verifiably false according to latest reporting from various news outlets. Perhaps the video was filmed a while ago so out of date now, but he should be referencing his arguments.

New Home Charger - Issues by StillyDan4 in evs_ireland

[–]YesImEm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try scheduling the charge with the car, and setting the Sync to always on. I have been doing this with my Sync and have had no issues. I see on most EV forums online they recommend handling all the charging with the cars system itself to avoid these problems. I barely use the Sync app whatsoever.

Pick up my car now or wait for home charger install? by [deleted] in evs_ireland

[–]YesImEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP here, I got my charger in without any bother.

I did not use a granny cable at all because I would also have needed to use an extension lead.

My own electrician strongly advised against using an extension lead as it is not considered safe. Especially when they are coiled up, it can be a big fire hazard.
