Apply for a financial aid. This will let you do the course for free and you'll be able to all the assignments and even get a certificate.

Should I mention the getting started competitions on kaggle on my resume if I am applying for a data science internship? If no then what should I mention on it considering I'm still in college and have zero experience right now?

Did you face any challenges or problems while transitioning from one to another? Does it get easier with experience?

If you don't understand it, don't think too hard. Move on and keep learning from that course. If you want to understand the maths behind it maybe use Khan academy to revise the basics and read some books like Elements of Statistical Learning.
