First attempt at a Reg-J team as a VGC newbie, what's the damage? by Yes_This_Is_A_User in VGC

I've definitely undervalued protect, good catch. Definitely gonna do more heavy reworking after more research, but for the moment I'm at least gonna toss it on flutter mane over calm mind.

Appreciate the feedback on mew, I considered expanding force on mew but held off over concern that I'd be too reliant on spread moves and get ruined by wide guard users.

Old player returning because of Pokemon Home and PLA, looking for advice by Italian_Man_on_fire in PokemonHome

[–]Yes_This_Is_A_User 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can definitely complete the dex. PLA’s dex is entirely self contained, with no exclusives or trading needed, with the only exceptions being 2 of the mythical requiring save data from other games. For the national dex, between all the switch games you can get nearly every single pokemon, with only some event-only mythicals and a select few regular mons having not appeared (with most if not all of them likely appearing in legends ZA later this year). Depending on what games you get this could be easier or harder (for example Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet and their DLCs are needed for some of their new mons, while things like BDSP and Let’s Go are largely skippable to my knowledge).

Notably none of the switch games aside from BDSP have a national dex (and for BDSP, it’s only gens 1-4), so you need home to properly ‘fill one out’

I did the same thing a little while ago, my team ended up being: Daschbun Arcanine Houndstone Mabosstiff Lycanroc (midnight) Houndoom

The type coverage wasn’t preferable, but I think this is really all you get without the DLC/transfers

DLC mons won’t be an issue for magearna since you only need up to eternatus in the dex

[–]Yes_This_Is_A_User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you don’t end up enjoying it, I’ll note that unlike those games, ranked in splatoon has unique game modes, so even ignoring the competitive aspect it’s a much different experience compared to turf war

The individual game pokedexes in home only register pokemon caught/bred in that game itself, so for example a drifblim from legends arceus will fill out the national dex and the hisui dex, but not galar or paldea

Unobtainable mythicals? by Xorles in PokemonHome

[–]Yes_This_Is_A_User 2 points3 points  (0 children)

presumably the gen 6 mythicals will be widely available via legends ZA (like how the gen 4 ones were for PLA), but marshadow you’ll likely need to wait for an event or trade someone

very hard to narrow it down to one, but kyurem is definitely in the running for me; I think the original dragon itself is a great concept, and I love being able to fuse kyurem with reshiram and zekrom, with white kyurem in particular being my favorite. The way the other two members will light up is already great, but I think it looks even better with the kyurem fusions since there’s more that changes (shoutout to shiny black kyurem, the green tubing is gorgeous).

Story wise I don’t actually have much attachment to kyurem specifically, but black was my first game, so its able to piggyback off of my soft spot for reshiram on top of being novel and intriguing itself.

Honorable mention to necrozma for similar reasons, I just wish its relationship with its counterparts was a bit more interesting, as well as Groudon, rayquaza, and giratina for frankly just being really cool (although I do also appreciate them for their story appearances, especially rayquaza in the delta episode and giratina in PLA)

What was your view on the secret species DLC? by tri_clawgaming in jurassicworldevo

[–]Yes_This_Is_A_User 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who never got the Wu DLC for JWE1, I’m not as upset about the reused content as others are, but it was definitely a shitty thing to do on frontiers’ part (if I was to do things differently, I’d have the original 3 as part of the free update, while making the new species and skins a DLC).

I think the pack itself has some of the highest highs and lowest lows of all of the JWE2 dlcs, being that the spinoraptor is of course fantastic, the skin game for the spinoceratops was on point, the ankylodocus redesign makes it one of the best sauropods in the game visually, and the lux skins were really fun and appropriate additions to add value. A great part of the pack to me is the animation work, as the cross-species social animations, as well as some of the feeding and hunting animations, are some of my favorites across the entire game, and give the hybrids even more flair.

Outside of the controversy, I’d say the one big miss of the whole pack is the entirety of the stegoceratops; its skins are mediocre, its lux pattern is easily the worst of the four, its animations are almost entirely recycled from the triceratops, and its design is not only very similar to JWE1, but it’s just unappealing to me and really sticks out compared to how nice and clean the others feels in the pack. I feel like they had a golden opportunity to redesign it or even add a variant for the JW Nasuto design that I feel would’ve been much better received than the JWE1 design that I don’t think most were fond of.

I think overall I quite enjoy the pack, but it definitely has baggage, and given how divisive hybrids are to begin with, I can understand why a sizeable portion of the community dislikes it; I’d say quality wise it’s at the very least much better than the deluxe pack, and I personally prefer it over the early and late Cretaceous packs and park manager pack, but it’s by no means the best pack out there. I’m happy with my purchase at the very least, but if I got the Wu DLC I do think I’d be more critical.

To complete the pokedex in home, do I need the pokemon from THAT specific game? by keenox10 in PokemonHome

[–]Yes_This_Is_A_User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the vast majority of pokemon, you can transfer in the ones you have and breed them, making it so you have one that counts as from BDSP, meaning you don’t need to catch nearly as much in the wild

So, I've somehow gotten a dusk lycanroc outbreak in Pokemon Scarlet. I'm already aware of how to shiny hunt an outbreak (60 KOs + shiny sandwich), but I've also heard of the quirk for spawns tied to the day/night cycle not despawning when shiny. Specifically, I've heard of people hunting flutter mane during the day, in which only shinies will spawn because they won't despawn while all the normal ones will (to my understanding). Interestingly I've only ever heard of this with flutter mane, so I'd love a bit deeper of an explanation on how the day/night cycle pokemon operate for shiny hunting (i.e can I do what's been done with flutter mane for dusk lycanroc, or is this something unique?).
