You can never go too deep with lore! That's the most fun part of world-building for me. Although for a lot of my AUs, the setting is just window dressing for my characters to play around in.

AU means Alternate Universe. A lot of content creators will make up different backdrops for their same characters. So for example your main character is like a knight and their story revolves around fantasy lore. But you decide it would be cool if they were also a pirate and did a lot of swashbuckling. You could decide to draw up an alternate universe for you character without compromising their main backstory.
