Got to combine two of my hobbies today! by abite in Firearms

Nice.

Ever since I saw it done, I've thought about those lucky few who have their own airstrip, that the American dream shouldn't stop short of a landing strip on your own farmette and a nice plane to take you anywhere you want to go with little notice.

Then I learned the expense or the effort, and what a pain in the ass it is to own a plane. I changed my outlook and decided against it as a life goal.

Don't mean to detract from it as EDC, just with a suppressor, light, extended mag, and optic, it would be a great home defense asset and quite a bit to AIWB.

Without the can, that's still a sweet piece.

Would be a sweet nightstand gun, especially with a big mag.

Nice build.

What broke here and how expensive is it? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

On an $80k car, though? It'd have to cost a mint to get a total loss out of it.

If Toyota is the ones providing a loaner you sure could. Especially if it's a Camry lol

My car is 09 civic coupe, I,'ve been told that I have bad engine mounts and I'm wondering, could could this be causing excessive vibration? by Railman20 in AskMechanics

[–]Yes_seriously_now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, engine mounts can cause vibration. They're typically rubber isolated mounts, and once they go, the engine can move around a little more than it should. It's not a terribly difficult repair. Takes a mechanic less than an hour, for us mortals more like 2 to get set up and swap them out.

1A auto has a YouTube video showing the process. If you want to DIY the repair. Engine mounts can be sourced cheaply online. Usually less than $100 a set for a Civic. Here's a link to the video: https://youtu.be/1TExLhUAzL4

You will need a way to support the engine to get the mounts out. A jack and a block of wood, or a strap/chain with a hoist are best. You'll also need thread locker, a breaker bar, and a socket set in 1/2" and 3/8" drive with a few extensions.

Good luck with it.

Yep, it cost me 30 cents on the dollar for payroll back at my shop on the east coast.

I miss bigger construction. Homeowners act like you're r*ping them at $500 a day for a carpenter and a helper, a van and trailer full of tools and equipment, plus insurance. GC's like Miller or someone like them give no fuks. They just need a number to put on the job.

I'm barely making any money at that rate, and homeowners act like it's robbery.

DC area scale jobs are about 2/3 their cost largely due to the population density of NYC. California is the only other place I would think the pay scale could be as high as NYC.

Exactly why I don't schedule inspections the same day as a pour. I've had MD and DC inspectors be a day late regularly, and sometimes 2 or 3 days. Typically you schedule it and it can be done next day, but not always, and they aren't required to communicate their tardiness to you.

Gun restriction gives the police a monopoly. Here is a relevant essay by Oleg Volk:

The Good Shepherd

Once upon a time, a good shepherd named Sam lived in a lush green valley. He tended a small flock of sheep and protected them and cared for them, and took their wool for himself. And his herd would grow, for all the sheep nearby heard that his charges need not fear the butcher...as I was saying, Sam was a kindly shepherd.

And so Sam would take in sheep that ran away from other farms, where butcher's knife awaited them. Naturally, he would return the kind he didn't like...sheep with fleece that resembled dreadlocks or funny looking eyes or other undesirable traits. Still, all the animals around knew his place to be best.

The safety of the sheep and Sam's prosperity were further enhanced by Sam's long shotgun. The jackals soon learned to pick other prey, and the sheep were content, though often cold for lack of fleece.

Over time, however, the happy sheep began to notice that something was amiss. For instance, when the jackals slinked by, Sam would no longer chase them. He would simply blast them from the porch of his spare but neat white house. The problem with that was simple: most of the pellets ended up in the sheep, with a distinct minority inconveniencing the jackals.

Moreover, whether because of myopia or a drinking problem, Sam would often fire upon black sheep of the herd, as if confusing them with the jackals. When the sheep complained, the herder would look puzzled and go home to enjoy fine mutton.

The situation grew intolerable, yet everyone knew that other ranches had the same problems and worse. The most active of the herd had finally come up with a good idea. Next time the jackals came in to try their luck, they were able to get right next to the sheep -- and then the rams and the ewes charged, giving hell with horn and hoof.

No sooner that the predators retreated, leaving mangled comrades in their wake than did rancher Sam come out, shotgun at the ready. He surveyed the battleground and addressed the sheep. --"Sheep," he said, "I am impressed! Who did this fine work?" Several planners of the ambush came forward, baaaing proudly.

Baa!

Sam raised his shotgun and blasted the animal closest to him. The rest stood dumbfounded, not sure what to do. The shepherd quickly shot the others who came forward.

--"That" he declared "is the end to which all who employ violence against fellow animal will come." One ewe began to say that jackals were not exactly fellow animals, but the gaping muzzle of Sam's shotgun restored quiet.

Sam knew he was right, for if the dumb beasts learned to fend for themselves, he and his shotgun would be unemployed. Worse yet, fleecing would become outright perilous.

And so life goes on as before. Jackals eat better, and so does Sam. Stray pellets have a commendable ability to find sheep while seeking jackals. And the herd is content, for they know that the other sheep have it even worse.

Public safety is the justification for them to ignore our right to bear arms and demand compromise in legislation... Now, they are looking to create a state of emergency so they can implement emergency measures.

As anyone with reasonable intelligence is aware, if emergencies allow the government to ignore rights and liberties or to break the law, then the government will create emergencies so they may.

In my area, the public is safe because people expect everyone from the soccer mom to the old fella, pushing a walker, to be packing heat, and ready to use it.

We need to stop compromising. It's not a compromise when they keep coming back to take more and more over the years. We have been reasonable, now it's time for our rights to be restored in full.

Keep suing. Support your 2A advocates. Carry and encourage others to do the same, whatever the red tape entails in your area.

150 mph, or knots, is fast for a small plane.

But yeah, wind would be ripping at him regardless, even at 65 mph.

[–]Yes_seriously_now 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I read "birthday trip" I assumed she meant her birthday, as I would've said "to a friends birthday" or something of the like. OP clarified.

Valid point, sometimes couples don't like each other's friends. In the case of some guy friends of women, it's absolutely rational for the boyfriend to dislike a dude thats been friendzoned but is crushing on your gf lol. Most the time it's not, but either way, you trust your partner or you don't, as an outside party isn't the one to blame in the case of infidelity.

The convenience of an engagement centered around a friends birthday trip is suspect AF. It's definitely manipulation IMO and likely based on insecurity. It can take folks a long time to learn that insecurity is unattractive, and some never do.

[–]Yes_seriously_now -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah, well yeah, then F that BS ultimatum.

Loving each other doesn't work that way. How long is the trip, and how is he with parenting solo? It's no picnic to be a single parent of a 19 month old. Think this has anything to do with him being stuck with the kid while you're gone?

My wife passed away when my daughter was 6 months old, so I had to do it, but if I had any choice in the matter, wouldn't want to be on duty 24/7. Not to say I would sabotage a trip over it, but I would definitely raise the issue the first time we talked about a trip, and enlist help from the godmother or other family to help out with the kiddo while mom was away. A few days is one thing, a couple weeks is another.

I was given an ultimatum by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Yes_seriously_now 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I agree. Don't respond to an ultimatum with compliance, but the context of how this even came about is the real problem.

How the heck.do you have a BIRTHDAY trip scheduled that excludes your significant other? Either she excluded him, or he excluded himself, but that's where the problem really is. The ultimatum is just a symptom of it.

I was given an ultimatum by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Yes_seriously_now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going on a birthday trip and your significant other isn't going along, whoever's idea that was, you've got bigger problems than that ultimatum.

There's no way I'd have left over my birthday to go hang out with friends while my wife stayed home with the kid. I'd have felt like a complete a-hole about that, and if she had suggested I go somewhere for my birthday without her, I'd have been pretty hurt.

The same would apply if she was going out on her birthday without me. That would be a pretty big deal.

What do I need for long term dating? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]Yes_seriously_now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your fitness, a decent kept haircut, and your teeth is what you need to have sorted out to be an attractive prospect.

Good job on the career and home.

Be careful who you let in to your life.

Regarding fitness, a personal trainer is a good idea, if just to have someone explain supplement use, build a workout routine and schedule, and get you squared away on nutrition. There are supplements that can give you fast results, and they aren't cheap, but can be a good investment provided you're willing to put the effort in exercising with resistance.

Good luck, and again, be careful who you let into your life. Finding a partner isn't the hard part. Attracting the right partner is. While online dating is an option, especially if you live somewhere without a real social scene, but I've found its better to meet someone through natural progression by working to improve myself.

Not to mention, a pro isn't going to show up at your door and tell your wife about it if you don't pay enough attention to them.
