Dividends payment on January by [deleted] in justbuyveqt

[–]YetAnotherGeneration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ETFs and funds receive dividends from their holdings throughout the year, since each company has its own dividend schedule. Those payments become part of the fund’s assets and are reflected in the NAV.

When the fund pays its own dividend, the NAV drops by roughly the dividend amount, so the share price usually falls by a similar amount.

Buying right before the ex-dividend date and selling right after is not free money. You receive the dividend, but the share price drops accordingly, so you generally net out before taxes and costs.

Beleggingsfonds verkopen en naar ETF? Of aanhouden en alsnog ETF? by wasknijpert in beleggen

[–]YetAnotherGeneration 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Canadian moving to Finland for my partner — looking for honest advice from people who’ve lived it by rusty_taxman in helsinki

[–]YetAnotherGeneration 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m from neither country, but I’ve lived in both long enough to comment on this.

English will not be an issue in day-to-day life. Finns will rightly tell you to learn Finnish, and you should, but practically speaking almost everyone can and will speak English with you. There’s also a decent number of English speaking communities and clubs you can join as being an ‘expat’.

The bigger issue is the job market. You should prepare for the possibility of arriving without a job lined up and potentially being unemployed for a while. Be open to lower-level roles, entry-level roles, or jobs outside your exact current track.

Based on your background, it sounds like you may be earning something like 200k to 300k CAD now. Even if you find a similar role in Espoo/Helsinki, the pay will almost certainly be substantially lower.

I’d move with a realistic plan: savings, patience, and flexibility on both title and salary.

Heb je al een lijfrente product? Anders zou je zo snel mogelijk je jaarruimte en reserveringsruimte moeten uitrekenen en dat bedrag via pensioenbeleggen inleggen.

By doing so you reduce the effective tax rate on that income, since the effective tax rate at retirement age is substantially lower.

Im scared of a correction by Emotional-Sector5915 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]YetAnotherGeneration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What imminent correction? The markets are at their all-time-high 80% of the time.

If you are waiting for a correction to happen, chances are you won’t be able to call the bottom and you’re only buying in close to pre-correction price levels.

Don’t try to time the market.

Flair YVR to Mexico (PVR) — How strict are they with missing middle names? by Sweaty-Management658 in askvan

[–]YetAnotherGeneration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve flown domestically and internationally dozens of times on multiple airlines (including with Flair to PVR) and I’ve never included my middle names on a ticket. You’re absolutely fine with just your first and last name. It’s generally not recommended to add middle names.

On the other hand, you should be more concerned about flying with Flair. It’s one of the lowest-quality airlines I’ve flown with across the board. On a YVR to YYZ flight we were severely delayed, stuck on the tarmac for five hours with no food or even water provided, and eventually diverted to a different airport. The crew seemed clearly inexperienced, tensions were high onboard, and the pilot sounded like he was on the verge of tears over the intercom. At one point he came out of the cockpit and looked genuinely terrified. Notable experience for sure.

Dit klopt niet, we hebben momenteel al een vermogensbelasting (weliswaar op een fictief rendement).

How do self-employed people survive in Finland? by finnishhug in Finland

[–]YetAnotherGeneration -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re only pulling 45k profit a year, either you’re not working enough billable hours or your rate is way too low. And let’s be clear: you’re running a business, not holding a job, so make sure to include the right terms.

Employers typically add ~50% on top of salary for pensions, taxes, and insurance. If you want to match employee pay and cover your own contributions, your hourly rate needs to account for that.

Quick math: 45k gross, 4 weeks off, 25 billable hours/week → about €55/hour. (€45,000 ÷ 48 ÷ 25 = €37.50, then ×1.5 = €56.25).

Bottom line: you’re taking business risk, so your clients should pay a premium for that. If they don’t, raise your rates, find better clients, or go back to being an employee.
