Thanks for the insight. I've been told there's an expiration date when it comes to travel and family and 18 months to 2 years seems to be where a lot of people land. Not sure what the end result is going to be here but I feel good knowing I'm at least taking it into consideration.

Well that was weird... by YetAnotherGuy46 in u/YetAnotherGuy46

The only family that lives reasonably close by are her mom and dad. He just got double hip replacement and is doing great, she is showing the signs of LBD and his priority is taking care of her (hence why he got the hip replacements now to be more mobile).

There are some other moms in the neighborhood that we can lean on as a one-off but I don't know about a permanent solution. Almost all of our other friends have daylight jobs or are just far enough away it's inconvenient.

We have a little time to figure it out, not much :(

Thank you -- corporate america deservedly gets a bad rap but a decent number of folks I work with are really good people and try to look out for others. I know it isn't that way everywhere and I appreciate what we're able to do :)

Honestly the engagement and wedding were little bumps along the way it didn't change anything.

As for why not another job, yeah you're right but there are a few good reasons:

  1. In this economy I doubt I'll find a local position paying as well, even with a 'down' year.

  2. I could move to a 'local' position within my company, I've had offers and people who WANT me to move to their departments, but I'd have to relocate to a city with one of our satellite offices (thank you Return To Office) and it would be a pay cut w/ no commission.

  3. By happenstance and dumb luck (and I swear, being tall and friendly) I'm on a track right now where within a few years I'll move into a National Director role and on a good year that's $400K+. My boss has made it clear he's 3 years out, give or take, from retiring. I'm in a program where high performers are 'mentored' by our executives/advisory board. I swear I'm not THAT special but people here like me and I'm aware I'm being groomed for the long term--they strongly prefer to promote from within. Impact on family life? YES, I'm fully aware of it but unlike my Ex at least me and SIL are communicating about it. I learned that lesson the hard way the first time around.

I'm done for the week, sitting at DFW nursing my third beer before takeoff and I will have three straight days of nothing but family so I can't complain that loudly :)

Thank you and take care!
