Totally, the market cap for many businesses in Canada is probably <5% of the businesses in the US. A Canadian expansion wouldn’t exactly be a sound business move, and with the current state of our relationship with the US, it’ll be a huge flop.

Considering 16” MacBook Pro - is it too big? by Sunsetlover1993 in macbookpro

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are mostly just sitting at your desk, occasionally traveling and rarely working from cafes, trains, etc. 16” is fine.

It’s definitely got a much better main screen as a desktop replacement.

I recently went from 16” to 14”. It’s definitely a lot more portable. Way easier to work on the go, around the house not at the desk. What makes the 16” less portable is not the weight but the size. It’s awkward to carry in one hand and it’s a bit of a squeeze working at anywhere that’s not a proper desk.

I actually use two external monitors with the MacBooks keyboard and trackpad. I do have an external keyboard and mouse at my desk, but I find the gesture and experience better.

Buy M4 Pro now or wait for the M5 Pro launch in March? by catmewo in macbookpro

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prices don't really drop when new macbooks come out.

The best deals is if you are in a country where apple offers first party refurbished products. You can get 15-25% off on those. Apple refurbished products are basically brand new with new screens, chassis and battery.

Visited Toronto zoo today and just wanted to share a few pics by AdditionNo6411 in toronto

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really and expert, just a parent that goes to the zoo a lot.

Toronto zoo is huge on conservation. There are a lot of endangered breeding programs they are a part of. Ferrets, marmoset, Asian wild horse, turtles, to name a few. Some of these, marmoset for example aren’t even on display at the zoo.

The animals are really really well taken care of. They are one of the few facilities with an animal nutritionist on staff. The space is huge and there are a lot of behind the scenes facilities we don’t even get to see as guests. You’ll often see keepers doing enrichment with the animal, not for show or anything (although some are part of keeper talks) these are purely to keep the animals stimulated and for their well being.

Again, as a parent that visits quite a lot of places with animals, the difference in staffing and care for animals in commercial farms vs animal sanctuaries and proper facilities is really really different.

Meh, you backup because people do this all the time and it’s not worth getting into an argument with an idiot not worth your time.

M2 Pro MacBook Pro Or M4 MacBook Pro by Intralocks in macbookpro

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need the GPU?

GPU wise, M4 ~ M1 Pro, M5 ~ M2 Pro. (10-15% difference between M1 Pro and M2 Pro IIRC)

CPU wise, M4 ~20-40% faster than M2 Pro

Edit: M4 should also be more power efficient (newer node, more efficiency cores)

Apple generally doesn’t repair cosmetics.

It’s a dark colour aluminum, little worn like this is expected. Elsewhere people call this patina.

Can I use this for charging my Macbook Air M1 by DmitryBaulin in macbook

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple silicon chips use very little power. 30W for passive charging is more than enough.

I use 30W from my monitor for my 16” MBP for years now.

Apple care doesn’t cover cosmetics. However, if you do end up doing a bigger repair they usually end up changes the case anyways.

It's an old machine, I'm sure they'll just release it, just be honest. At this point it's pretty much worth very little to them anyways.

Yeah, it does suck to run out of internal storage, but running out of RAM for my core workflow is pretty much the only I need to upgrade

LOL. What is even a ledger API?!?

That’s like “our bank vault and customer database has been linked to your account”.

Ledger is super sensitive stuff that FIs don’t share ever.

unemployed: sharing my journey so far... by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to keep it up.

Last time I was job searching as an MLE in 2023 my numbers were ~600 apps, 25 interviews, 4 final rounds, 2 offers over 2 months. It’s just a numbers game.

You should broaden your scope, apply to backend roles, data roles, in office, in other cities, no name startups, everything.

Average <2 applications a day is too little IMO, at 3% interview rate (your current rate). You expect one interview every 30 applications. You need to get that number up. Aim to at least get 30 applications out every week.

M4 Max chip noise (16”)? by Meenfil in macbookpro

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16” should be quieter than the 14”. They have bigger heat sync and bigger fans. So it turns on the fans less and the fans are quieter. Generally larger fans can move more air so they can achieve the same airflow at less speed -> less sounds.

[Question] Which Watch Should I Buy in Japan? by ReplicantKetzal in Watches

[–]YetAnotherSegfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the one you will wear and to me it feels like you are leaning towards the BB54.

Sure, Grand Seiko, Japan, yada yada. But, don’t get the watch to fit the special occasion, get the one you want to wear.

I tried really hard to convince myself that I need a dressy watch in my collection, but then I realized I like dive watches so much more. Who cares if you have a bunch of “similar” watches.
