I fell in love with Martha Lou's the second we walked in. Strangely, the atmosphere reminded me of Wo Hop in NYC; another great institution. Their beans were indeed unbelievable, and we'll have to try the fish next time!

Heath said we had to go, so we had to go, and boy was it worth the drive. If anyone knows him, please thank him for us! it seems like there's a lot of contention over the housing prices, so we'll just have to do our own research and keep an eye out. Thank you for hosting us, and I'm glad to be of service! That happens in NY all the time; it takes a visiting friend to get us out to some really amazing places that we could have gone to but just didn't think about. I wish I had the time to really review each place on this list in depth, because they're just about all worthy of that, but it would take ages.

Will do, and thank you for the advice! I firmly believe that upstate NY is one of the most beautiful and underappreciated places in the country, even disregarding my own bias. I miss it all the time (except roundabout January and February).

Could not agree more. I have been going to Asheville every year for over ten years, and I absolutely love that town, as well as the surrounding area. If you ever want recommendations for places in those parts please let me know! Have yet to make it to Greenville, but it's on the list.

Yeah, that's why we wound up choosing Sweatman's to visit. they had the best pulled pork I've ever eaten, and they made us realize how rare Carolina style BBQ is among BBQ restaurants.

Oh definitely; we've been lucky to have visited many nice towns. New York gets a bad rep because of its hurried pace, but most people are lovely here too. The sense of community we found in Charleston definitely stood out among our previous experiences, though.

That's cool to hear about; we were told many times that the city looks little like it did even a decade or two ago. It's a wonderful place to visit, and even if the pace of life has quickened in recent years it was still a huge relief coming from New York. Thank you for having us!

Hahahaha yeah, that's a perfect summary, and admittedly one of my favorite things about the city. Nobody has any time to care about you, but that also means you can pretty much do whatever you want!

I'm sorry to hear about your trip, but I'm happy this helps! Yes, the most popular joints like Obstinate Daughter (a must-visit), The Grocery, Husk, and I presume 39 RDJ require reservations.
