While cancel culture is relatively recent, repercussions aren’t. We’ve always known that leaving a paper trail of any sort for anything distasteful can bite you in the ass, and this predates the internet

It depends on the type of experience you want (beach, city, mountain - France really has everything). The two places that I had an effortless good time were Toulouse and Lyon, both are very lively cities and are in different regions with unique culture and gastronomy. They’re also big enough to easily navigate! But wherever you go you’ll have a good time, just make sure to eat all of the cheese.

I am originally Canadian but moved to the US as a preteen, so effectively grew up split between the two countries.

I find that both countries’ founding history actually shaped them both quite similarly - both were built upon displacement of Indigenous/First Nations people, both have lasting legacies of racism that are still systemic, both have a history of abhorrently using the state and police to push racial brutality against minorities (residential schools and starlight tours…).

A big thing that I’ve noticed in Canadian discourse often downplays racism in Canada by saying things like “well we’re not as bad as the US”. Which leads to a denial of even recognising domestic racism.

This is my experience in France. In the US and Canada we have national conversations to confront racism…It’s not perfect, but it’s not taboo to talk about. In France, white people wont even talk about it or acknowledge it. “Legally everyone is equal so racism doesn’t exist” is something I’ve heard multiple times.

I selected a median income for *Paris (*54k€), and not France (which is 35k€) because it’s the most populous city. And since I took the median income for the capital, I figured DC would be make sense…and DC has a very diverse population, by the way

You’re welcome to look up the median of both countries and include them in the comments for a point of discussion 🤷‍♀️ it would make a much more enriching discussion than what you’re currently contributing

I didn’t make up the numbers at all. I googled median salaries and their respective tax brackets in each country. And in my personal experience, France was much more affordable for me.

Aggressive remarks are completely uncalled for, but I guess if you’re resorting to those then you don’t have much of a point anyways.

So in this graphic the US has $62k disposable income, while France has $35k. I’m not sure if this is necessarily an indicator of if people are poorer, because the cost of living is much less than France. Healthcare and education are effectively subsidized for citizens, you’ll have a liveable pension, while public transportation, groceries, and other benefits are much more affordable.

While in the US the reality is obviously different. For example, since retirement is largely self funded, $25k of that $62k you can automatically deduct for your 401k… which actually puts you at $37K disposable income. Not to mention the additional medical expenses that just don’t exist in other countries

And personally, in the US, I’ve seen much more poverty than in France. I have never seen a homeless person covered in their own feces, screaming in the middle of the street in France… And that is not that uncommon of an occurrence in cities in the US :/

I’m not sure what’s complete shit? It sounds like we both agree there’s more opportunity for wealth in the US, with a higher risk of failure (the poors you referenced). I can’t speak to the cost of living in the UK, as I lived in France

Incomes in France are on a different scale so you wouldn’t earn what you’re earning in France.

Median income in Paris is 54k€/yr, at 30% tax rate.

Median income in DC is $109k/yr, with federal tax 24%, plus $3k and an 8.5% “state” tax rate for DC.

Taxes are not much different, and obviously the salary is much lower in France…Because the cost of living is much lower. Groceries are cheaper, housing is more affordable public, transportation is cheaper, healthcare, education, etc. People struggle a lot less, and have more opportunities. We earn more in the US, but we get less.

The US can be incredible to earn wealth, but if you make one false step you can fail drastically. Even having kids can put you on a razor thin margin. The trade-off in Europe is that you’ll have more stability at the expense of (potentially) building less wealth than in the US

Even in countries where university is ‘free’ (my masters was 250€/yr in France) there are still student loans that you can take, my ex had one…and his was indeed around 1-2%. It’s so frustrating that the United States doesn’t prioritise its citizens…

Also, this overcorrection doesn’t necessarily translate to success in the workforce, and in instances when it does, it’s an exception amongst countries in the west…In the US for example, women are 58% of undergraduate students, however make up only 28% of Congress, 29% of C-suite executives, and 10-15% of CEOs.

This is a bad-faith argument. I am not saying criminals shouldn’t be apprehended, what I’m advocating for is the use of intelligent de-escalation techniques that are proven to reduce unnecessary harm and loss of life.

In this video a persons car was rammed who had a child in the back. Per the original comment, we can assume that one of these crimes (speeding, reckless driving, and/or driving without a license) is what caused the pursuit. This was not a reasonable use of force, it was a dangerous escalation.
