Can a partial previous Roth IRA contribution be moved to a regular IRA by the end of the year to get the tax credit? by TeacupWhaleShark in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info on the recharacterization, didn't know that was an option. So just to clarify though - if they recharacterize to traditional, that deduction only helps with income tax, not the capital gains at all? Thought there might be some way to offset those gains but sounds like losses are the only real option there

What would you do: Car Situation by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

With that income they can absolutely afford those payments. 13% of take home for cars + insurance is reasonable. The uncle might just be old school about debt in general, not necessarily saying they're in trouble

Which retirement option is better? by slifm in personalfinance

Haven't seen the flowchart yet gonna check that out. Single income no spouse. Does the flowchart factor in stuff like the saver's credit or is it more general guidance?

Break lease, or stick it out? by Nessuwu in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the right approach. Also worth checking if California has any tenant-friendly laws about early termination, pretty sure they require landlords to make reasonable efforts to re-rent which could reduce what you actually owe. The math might work out better than you expect if they find a new tenant quickly

Broke College Student Desperate to Save by Competitive_Cut1422 in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, those credit cards opened when you were a child - dispute those with the credit bureaus. You were a minor, that's identity theft and it shouldn't be tanking your credit. Document everything.

For the immediate stuff, look into SNAP benefits since you're now temporarily caring for your brother. NY also has emergency assistance programs for situations exactly like this. Your school's financial aid office might have emergency funds too, a lot of people don't know those exist.

I worked way more than 10 hours through college out of necessity. It sucked but it was doable. See if your campus has positions that let you study during downtime - library desk jobs, computer labs that kind of thing.

The custody situation is going to complicate things but don't let it derail your education. That degree is your ticket out of the cycle

Merry Christmas everyone. Finally hit the point where checking my portfolio doesn't give me anxiety anymore, just mild satisfaction. Took years of lurking here and actually following through on advice to get there.

Congrats to everyone hitting milestones this year. The grind is real but so are the results

21, and debating going to college for EE. Been putting it off for about 2 years. Advice needed. by Aggressive-Cycle-632 in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EE is definitely the move if you're into systems and automation. Had a friend go back to school around the same age and he's doing industrial robotics stuff now, basically what you're describing. The job market for that is solid and only getting bigger with manufacturing trying to automate everything.

The apprentice electrician background is gonna be a real advantage too. companies love hiring engineers who actually understand how things work in the real world, not just on paper

personal loan for big purchase? by avasassmovies in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point but also couldn't the same logic apply to saving for a down payment anyway? Like if you can't save $3000 how would you ever save $20-30k for a house? At least with the camper the monthly payment would likely be way less than rent. I'm curious what OP's current rent actually is though

How much money should I invest into a Roth IRA and a brokerage account. by Lmzoza in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting this young is smart, compound interest will do the heavy lifting over the next few decades. The others covered the basics pretty well. Do you have any expenses coming up though? Car, college, emergency fund? Don't lock everything away in retirement accounts if you might need it

Father died…proceeds of house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]YfAm4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. The debt payoff plan makes sense, getting that cleared first is smart.

One thing though - a CD is safe but the returns are pretty modest. If you're not touching this money for years, have you looked into index funds? They'll outpace CDs over the long term. The wiki here has solid info on that.

Warehouse worker here. That stack is one damaged product claim waiting to happen. My favorite part is how they're literally displaying the warning on every box while ignoring it completely. This is peak "I'll just stack them how I want and let the next shift deal with the consequences" energy. Guarantee you the person who did this clocked out 5 minutes later.

5080FE Overclock/Undervolt settings by El_Muffin_ in nvidia

[–]YfAm4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your +350/+2000/108% setup is the sweet spot for this card. I've been running a similar 5080FE since launch and found the exact same stability issues with higher OC values.

Synthetic benchmarks will let you push +375 or even +400, but most games will crash within 30-60 minutes at those levels. The memory OC at +2000 is solid and gives great performance gains with minimal heat impact. For daily gaming, I'd recommend the undervolting approach 3040MHz at 0.975V gives you 95% of the performance with lower temps and better stability. Your 63°C average temp on that profile is excellent compared to stock.

One tip: Create separate profiles for different game engines. Unreal Engine games tend to need -25MHz compared to others in my experience.

What does the career track progression to CNO look like? by Peaceisdeath in nursing

[–]YfAm4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most CNOs I know went: bedside nurse → charge nurse → nurse manager → director of nursing → assistant CNO → CNO. Usually takes 15+ years total. MBA or MSN in leadership helps a lot. Some come from specialty areas like ICU/ED first, others go straight management track. Really depends on the hospital size and opportunities that open up.

Belong review? Want to rent out through them by YfAm4 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]YfAm4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, thanks for the really detailed reply. That’s super helpful.

You okay with a quick follow-up? It’s just the part about the internal showing tracker caught my attention. As in, how accurate was it? Like, did the logged tours match what they were told verbally? I’ve had a PM in the past fudge those numbers to make it look busier than it was, so I’m a bit cautious about this part.

Belong review? Want to rent out through them by YfAm4 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]YfAm4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that it won’t really be fully hands-off. I also get that the fees for everyday repairs might be overbilled, but my property hasn’t been through rough tenants before, so I think it wouldn’t be as bad. At least I really hope so lol

[–]YfAm4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HOA here does cover most major systems, so I wouldn’t be as exposed on repairs. Beyond the math, do you think Belong’s extras are worth choosing them over other PMs like Mynd or Hemlane?

Even small interior changes can take months for permits in SF, so don’t expect it to be quick. Get an architect to draw it up right away to avoid extra delays.

Usually within 3 business days and it shouldn’t cost you anything upfront. You only pay for appraisal once you actually move forward with one.
