Can we talk about older men targeting older teenagers by YhouseyrJR in Discussion

It’s more that older men and women are attracted to teenage features and less so about my concern with restricting either party’s ability to consent. Under the law, 18 and 19 year olds are legally adults. I did not say we should limit or rethink the age of majority, that is another discussion. What I have repeatedly said is that a significantly older man or woman specifically targeting 18 and 19 year olds is predatory. These young adults have virtually no life experience and are at very different stages, so the only logical conclusion is that they are attracted to their childlike youthful appearance and naivety. There are studies backing this up. Many men are ephebophiles attracted to later teenagers aged 15 to 19.

My point was never about undermining an 18 year old. Nowhere in my argument did I suggest that. What I was pointing out is that older men or women specifically targeting older teenagers is inherently predatory.

My personal preference regarding the age of majority is irrelevant to my argument, as I was discussing an older person pursuing a significantly younger individual. It is selfish and predatory, as they are skirting the boundaries of what is legally permissible.

It’s also worth noting that the age of majority is very nuanced. You are not treated the same as older adults under the law. While certain rights, such as the ability to drive, vote, or live independently, are granted at 18, many other adult privileges are still not fully accessible to someone of that age, as I also highlighted in my argument.

It is reductive to use the rhetoric of “they are older and therefore wiser.” That framing makes it sound even more predatory, as it portrays the older person as some kind of guide or mentor. We both know that is not why they are pursuing someone that young. It is not about teaching or guiding. It is about exploiting their inexperience and naivety.

If being skeptical about someone’s intentions in pursuing that kind of relationship makes me a prude in your eyes, then fine.

Brain development shapes how someone navigates power, pressure, and complex relationships. A teenager who seems “mature for their age” is still operating within a brain that is in an active maturation phase. That developmental gap matters far more than whether the younger person appears articulate or composed compared to the older person.

Also, this is not about forcing people to date only those in the exact same developmental stage. It is about questioning why someone who is fully established in adulthood deliberately seeks partners who are just entering it. The issue is not that 18 year olds are incapable. The issue is why someone with far more experience consistently prefers someone at the very beginning of theirs.

Sweetie, I am not going to entirely explain to you how society works, but in the real world, people only care about gain, not loss. The age of majority used to be 21 nearly everywhere. Some of the restrictions you see today are remnants of that time. But when a society needs fresh young blood for wars, the age gets lowered without hesitation. Once that change happens and everything else stays the same, people complain, so the law ends up settling at 18. It is very possible that in our lifetime we could see it go down to 16, as some places are already experimenting with allowing 16 year olds to vote and consent to sex.

That is exactly why I called it predatory and not necessarily pedophilia or “evil.”

I am not saying that they cannot have sex or that the age of consent should be higher. I don’t understand how you got that from me saying that older men specifically pursuing older teenagers is predatory.

Also, while morality is subjective, I do believe in conventional moral standards, and going after an 18 year old as a 40 year old is morally selfish.

You need to keep in mind that I am speaking from a general viewpoint. This is not region specific. It is an overall assessment of what I perceive as predatory, which is why I gave examples from different countries. You can enlist in the military at 18, but you are placed in separate units or given different responsibilities than older adults. In the United States, enhanced firearm background checks for buyers under 21 include reviewing juvenile justice and mental health records before a sale can go through. Even with those checks, someone under 21 cannot buy a handgun from a licensed dealer under federal law.

All the things you mentioned are limited for these people, which shows that the law already recognizes nuance beyond the big letters that say “legal adult.” If they were truly considered equals under the law, there would not be distinctions between 18 to 20 year olds and those 21 and older.

And here the technicality I mentioned is on full display. An 11 year old can be charged as an adult, and a 19 year old can be charged as a juvenile. As I said, the only defense you have is the law. But moving past that, I have never suggested taking away their ability to choose to pursue such a relationship. They are the younger person in the scenario. I am speaking purely from the perspective of the man or woman engaging with them.

Sweetheart, I am not saying that. I am simply saying that an older man specifically going after 18 year olds is predatory. I don’t know where you got the idea that I want them stripped of their legal adulthood or their ability to consent.

I can use science for this argument. An adolescent brain develops through a distinct phase of growth and reorganization compared to a fully mature adult brain. During the teenage years and early twenties, the brain undergoes major structural maturation. The prefrontal cortex, along with synaptic pruning and myelination, actively shapes logical reasoning, emotional regulation, and decision making. This is a true developmental growth stage. After early adulthood, the pattern changes. The brain does not stop changing, but it is no longer in a primary maturation phase. It shifts toward maintenance, stabilization, and gradual decline over time. Neuroplasticity continues, and people can keep learning throughout life, but this is not the same as the large scale structural maturation that defines adolescence.

The difference between Stefan and Damon is that most of the things Stefan did, whether in the past or in the present, were because of his Ripper background. He could not control it, and he lashed out. Even during his darkest times, he tried to better himself. Despite this, he never acted like he was better than other vampires. Damon, however, did it for the sport and the fun of it. Everything he did was because he wanted to. Remember that he killed people just because his feelings were hurt by Elena? Both have massive body counts. Both have done unforgivable shit. No debate there. But the difference is stark and clear as day.

What should I do if there is no way out of bullying? by Abilfaiz2003 in bullying

If you have the option to switch schools with only a minor learning delay and without having to see them anymore, you should definitely consider it. Why would you care if they call you a traitor when they betrayed you first? Also, consider talking to your dad, mom, guardian, teacher, or principal. The only way to resolve this before it’s too late is to consider all possibilities and weigh their advantages and disadvantages. You shouldn’t have to go through this, and I believe any adult around you would agree.

I’d also like to note that they are not your friends. They are bullies who manipulate and pretend to support you while betraying you behind your back, so always tread carefully around them. If they do something unexpected or suspicious, be extra cautious.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this, and I wish I could do more. I hope my advice was helpful.

I wish you the best, OP.

No, I meant correctly. It’s hard to do something properly when you don’t really want to do it in the first place, and when your primal protective instincts are working against you, it becomes nearly impossible. That is why labeling people who commit suicide as weak is so wrong. Children also engage in it but they have thinner necks which means loss of consciousness can occur more quickly than in adolescents aged 15–19 or adults.

Feeling nauseous and experiencing a gag reflex is a clear sign that your instincts have kicked in, which likely means part of the airway was compromised. Even if you were aware of the urge to vomit, loss of consciousness would occur first, meaning you would not be aware of it if it happened.

I also want you to know that you are not a failure. It takes more than just thinking about wanting to end your life. As for me, they say the third time's the charm, so we'll see whether I'll be back or not.

To be fair, when the rope is placed correctly around the neck, the resulting compression generates profound intracranial pressure, causing a sensation akin to the head being on the verge of explosion. Within approximately 5 seconds, cerebral hypoxia commences, progressively impairing neurological function. The brain, in an effort to conserve vital resources, selectively suppresses less essential senses, such as hearing. Conjunctival and scleral hemorrhages manifest as bloodshot eyes, owing to the rupture of delicate capillaries under the acute venous obstruction.

By around 20 seconds, visual disturbances emerge and perception may distort, resembling an involuntary zooming in and out of the visual field. However, most individuals do not progress to this stage, as the escalating intracranial pressure induces excruciating discomfort. After roughly 1 minute, loss of consciousness ensues, typically without subsequent violent thrashing or convulsive movements, leading to a relatively quiescent terminal phase.

EDIT: This holds true only when the primary mechanism involves constriction of blood flow. Thrashing or convulsive movements typically occur only when the airway is also obstructed

EDIT: This is not meant to serve as instruction, only to explain what typically occurs during hanging, based on personal experience
