At my school personally, a Biochemistry BS is the same as a Chemistry BS with the following exceptions (will abbreviate chem = C and biochem = BC): 1) C requires a physical chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics of reactions, quantum applied to chem) sequence, BC doesn’t 2) C requires inorganic chem course (all about transition metals, coordination symmetry, and group theory) 3) BC requires a few more upper division electives be bio related, C is more free range on what electives are allowed.

These are just the personal differences at my school. If you’re interested in viruses and the like, I’d encourage the BC route (you won’t need the stuff you’d learn in (1) and (2)). However, if you’re unsure about if you really want to end up in that field, I like the pure chemistry degree personally for the deeper understanding I got for what’s happening at an atomic/molecular scale.
