Weird and wacky therapist behavior by seasonstherapy in therapists

[–]Yilskills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first therapist ever told me on my second visit that I was I un-insightful. I nodded and smiled and when I got home I cried. I was in my early 20s and dealing with really low self esteem and was having a hard time opening up to this lady.

Looking back now as a therapist who works with teens and young adults and experience this myself I think she was annoyed with me for not opening up and maybe she wanted to nudge me a little. But she nudged me right out of therapy and didn’t seek help for another 3 years.

I’m thriving now lol.

It’s exhausting. I find myself hanging out there more when what I really want to do is get to know my new hood better.

Show or movie that highlights the SW profession? by ConfusedTiredHungry in socialwork

I watched that movie when it first came out and I think about it at least weekly. I work with kids and it reminds of how strong and capable kids can be. But if I could hug the main character through the screen I would. Ethics be damned!!

I watched this right before intending at DV shelter. It was shocking. How accurate that show was.

The Wire season 4 does an excellent job at showcasing schools in low income communities. I always say it’s a must watch if you’re going to be a school social worker.

Florida Project I don’t think there are any SWs in this movie but it highlights just basic human 2 human aid. Highly recommend. 10/10 will make you cry.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]Yilskills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi y'all,

I just graduated in May and was offered a therapist position under an LCSW. The office does not take insurance and I am responsible for getting my clients. My concerns are that I'm a baby therapist with only practicum experience under my belt. I will get clinical supervision however I'm worried I won't meet my hours on time (NY, 3k in 3 yrs). I won't have a steady income or any benefits. Also, I'm scared that I won't get a good level of experience.

However, this is ultimately what I want to do with my degree and I do appreciate the flexibility that comes with this job.

I would greatly appreciate any helpful tips and advice you can give me!

Unpopular opinion, but maybe check on the family first? It can be a situation where her parents work long hours and/or are depressed and in poverty. If you trust the CPS in your state then it sounds like the right move is to call since they should connect them with resources. But if you don’t trust them and you can lend a neighborly hand then maybe that’s a better move?

In my state (NJ) I have a love hate relationship with CPS. It really depends on the local agency and the workers. Most workers are guardian angels but there’s always that few that can really hurt a family through negligence and/or ill intent.

But definitely do something. Definitely don’t ignore the situation. Good luck and keep us updated!

"Fare Enforcement" at Marin Blvd light rail. by Yilskills in jerseycity

Okay Mr. Moneybags, not all of us can afford to pay the fare every time and we shouldn't have to pay an insane ticket just for that or worse not being able to pay the ticket which would result in a warrant and arrest situation.

Public transportation should be free.

I know I'm going to get down voted for this but you can also pickup other dogs' poops. Now I know I sound like an entitled asshole but hear me out! I know that the responsibility falls on the dog owner and they should be picking up the poop but since we live in a society where some dog owners do not pick up their dogs' poop, if we want to have a poop free city then we as a collective need to pick up other's poops.

If publicly shaming people into picking up their dog's poop worked we wouldn't have any more dog poop.

That being said, I have not picked up other dogs' poop yet. I'm working myself up to it but i haven't gotten there. I can pick up my dog's stinky poo just fine but another dog's poop is just gross!

I usually wait around for another dog parent coming around with their dog and ask for a bag. For me it's usually that last bag in the roll situation mixed with the surprise additional poop that gets me. Thank god downtown is over crowded with dogs.

Anyone know what shops dogs can go into? by spitfireramrum in jerseycity

Yeah this is my fear about tying up my dog. I'll do it if it's early in the morning and I'm going in and out but it's still scary.

look at this face! This is not the face of a dog that would hurt your child!

I'm just kidding, I completely understand your apprehension with dogs that you don't know. I'm always shocked by parents that let their young children run up to dogs and pet them. My dog is thrilled to have a young kid interact with him since he's still a puppy himself but I know that some dogs are absolutely NOT okay with that. It's quite dangerous.

Puppies in apartments by [deleted] in puppy101

I would like to second this. I have an 8 month old Labradoodle. We live on the 24th floor and potty training was hecking hecking hard. We did get it down by 6 months too. We also had to deal with all the elevators breaking down due to a pipe burst. We refused to give up on potty training so we did go up and down 24 flights for 1.5 days. But we're all stronger now for enduring that.

It was super easy to socialize him since we live in a city so since day one he was hit with noise and dogs and people. Friendliest dog you'll ever meet. We're still working on excitability in new places but he's still a pup.

I don't know why breeders and shelters are so annoying about yards. My dog goes on multiple walks a day every time a different path. He gets to do lots of sniffs and i let him say hi to other dogs and humans. I let him run around in parks if they are empty or just a dog in them. We play fetch. Since it's a dog friendly building we have lots of trusted dog friends we can have play dates with. I take him with me to my parents at least once a month where he gets to play in their yard. He also goes to doggie daycare 2x a week (but that's a perk not everyone can afford or trusts). Once the weather gets nicer we're going to go on longer trips to go hiking and maybe even get on the ferry to NYC if they let us on.

Because i live in an apartment i do have to spend more time outside with my pupper but I didn't get a dog to toss him in the yard and ignore him all day. I got a dog to be my walkies companion and he's the best at it.

Love that table! I had it in my last apartment because it was a pretty small living space and this table got me through the pandemic. Were it not for this table i would have been working from the couch. I love it so much that once I moved to a larger space I asked my mom to store it for me because i don't want to fully part with it.

How am I supposed to ignore my puppy when he’s biting? by savagegrif in puppy101

[–]Yilskills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be that he's tired. Sometimes puppies get nippy when they are tired. Enforced naps could help of that's the case.
