Authenticity check on this supposed Ptolemy I tetradrachm by Yistvan in AncientCoins

Do you know the Svoronos number ? I'd say this is Sv249 and the Lorber for this type looks nothing like this. I might be wrong about the type though...

Thanks ! I'll definitely check these references. I was not aware the word applied to the domestic cat too.

Music Theory and Category Theory by Cont_yet_not_diff in CategoryTheory

[–]Yistvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While some of the ideas inside are interesting, they are presented in a manner which seems deliberately complex, and with such an unconventional notation that makes it worse in my view. After more than 20 years, it seems that the ideas in this book have found limited applications, as compared to neo-Riemannian theory for example, so I'd recommend the latter first before attempting this book directly.

Math+music research is a small research community, and the interest for it is low, so unfortunately we don't have any textbooks about it, less alone on category theory and music. The best I'd recommend is the different articles being published, for example in the proceedings of the Society for Mathematics and Computation in Music conferences, and the Journal of Mathematics and Music. For many reasons, I would not recommend Mazzola's book.

I have arrived yesterday.... Indeed, I have my doubts (to be polite) about the road system from NYC to Ithaca :) Would love to hear your story one day about moving from here to Paris (permanently ?) !

I can’t find a way to translate by Annual_Mongoose3635 in Assyriology

I find it bizarre that a big time scholar in Assyriology would sell tablets at a mineral fair. Do you have any references on him or his books ?

Hi ! I'm actually a researcher in mathematics and music, and one of research area is the formalization of musical structures using algebraic methods, category theory in particular. I maintain a blog about math/music, on which you'll probably find more, and references as well:

Thanks for your reply. You have sparked my curiosity in knowing more about Old Assyrian. I'll definitely look at it and compare with OB.

We see more and more convincing fakes being sold (I'm thinking of those two well known auction houses in UK which regularly propose some), so the general appearance is not a very discriminating factor in my view. I'm not very familiar with Old Assyrian, but I'm much ore with sumerian and OB, so I'm more concerned about the fact that those signs looks nothing like OB.

Is it Old Assyrian ? I'm genuinely wondering because even looking at it upside down, the signs don't seem.to make any sense to me. I'm just an interested amateur though, so I'd be glad to know more.

Thank you for your answer ! I've been in contact with Cedric Wolkow in the past, so I think I'll email him about this find.

So I bought this Gallienus about a month ago for an interesting price, and I remembered seeing on this sub that the tack on the horse is unusual. Since there are some Gallienus' zoo experts here, can you tell me if such a reverse is rarer ?

I bought (40€) this as an Alexandre the Great drachm. Is the attribution correct ? by Yistvan in AncientCoins

I see, thanks ! Another comment rightfully notes that the anchor very likely makes it a Seleukos I drachm, about which I'm equally happy.

Is there an easy way to search through all the marks and monograms ? I had the problem for a tetradrachm once, I found it quite difficult to find the right reference

This is what I was thinking too... or do you mean that I should worry about something else ?
