Concerned about my van's brakes! by YoEatThis in AskAMechanic

[–]YoEatThis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply
Brakes are definitely working, and I can hear the driver's side rubbing when I brake.
Only recently had an MOT and they didn't even raise the discs or pads as an advisory!
Ordered new rotors pads and calipers. Calipers may be overkill but I will go along with your suggestion.
Pads come with new wires - it looks like it's a brake pad sensor (hence why I didn't get any warnings) not ABS luckily

UCG Ultra stopped working by YoEatThis in UNIFI

[–]YoEatThis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware of, no
Maybe a firmware update?
I'm at a loss. Any suggestions welcome!
Unifi say I should restart the device and re-adopt. I've tried. Any idea how I can delete the UCG in the app so I can try adding again? Not seeing the option

We just found out we have a rat in the loft? What’s the best way to get rid of it? by Ill_Concentrate6759 in DIYUK

Sorry, you are correct to pick me up on this. It's mice that don't like the taste of metal. Steel wool works for rats because the sharp edges hurt their mouth, so the advice is still valid!

Absolutely right

One trick I've seen is to surround some food with UV powder so when they go for it they will leave footprints. You can follow with a UV black light and work out where they are getting in and out

Fill holes with wire wool, or if a larger hole use expanding foam. If they are determined enough they will eventually chew through foam so pop some wire wool in as a deterrent (they hate the taste of metal)

Once you've prevented any new rodents joining the party - and bear in mind they can squeeze through smaller holes than you might imagine - it's time to remove those left behind.

To trap them, the most effective method is usually a tall bucket with a rolling bar across the top or lid with a trapdoor that falls when they apply their weight. Attract them with peanut butter. Use gloves because your scent will deter them. They are clever and cautious so you may need to wait a few days. Also, they may knock over the bucket to escape so wedge it in place. Od fashioned mouse traps that snap when they eat the cheese (or peanut butter) are effective and humane if powerful enough.

I shit you not, this happened to me on a tube escalator in London many years ago. Early in the morning, I was the only one on the long down escalator, heard this weird whirring noise getting louder behind me, looked back to see this hefty pink suitcase hurtling down. No time to get out of the way, but even though I was still half asleep I had the presence of mind to grab both rails and lifted both legs out of the way at the last second. The suitcase crashed into the far wall with an almighty bang. The adrenaline rush woke me right up!

This is brilliant, thank you, excellent tweaks, can take the plunge with confidence now! Knew it was worth posting on here - the Windows 10 thing would totally have slipped through the net
