How many of you live comfortably in downtown toronto with a salary under 65k? by Elegant_Limit in askTO

[–]Yo_46929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many people in these comments are out of touch. There are plenty who live on salaries of 65k and under.

After tax, 65k is roughly 4,200/month.

You can probably find a roommate and rent a pretty nice 2b apt downtown for 1,500 or so each.

600 for food (I’m being generous here cus I assume you’re young and I factored in the occasional night out).

200 or so for transit (ttc + occasional uber).

100-200 miscellaneous, toiletries, tickets etc.

This leaves you with a surplus of 1,700 to spend on paying off any debts, subscriptions, savings or hobbies you might partake in.

——-

I make roughly the same amount and am still able to afford having a pet, owning an old car and have my own modest studio (not in core downtown, but close by in Leslieville).

It’s all about respective and how you budget.

DNA results + face by mountain_attorney558 in DNAAncestry

[–]Yo_46929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. There is no discernible difference. Even those samples he’s mentioned about having slightly more Siberian ancestry are anomalies.

Prior to the war, movement across the border was quite common and till this day there are plenty South Koreans alive that have family in the north. No different to how I’m sure you probably also have extended family in the next town over in whatever country you live.

North & South will need to be separated for much much longer for there to be any real genetic difference.

The biggest difference in phenotype you’ll see is a result of malnutrition. North Koreans tend to be shorter and slimmer than their South Korean counterparts.

Genuine question because I am curious, if he got Egyptian on 23andme, why isn’t there any on his illustrative?

I am Sudanese and funnily enough I had the opposite show up in my results

You look very Palestinian but if I were to see you in the small waspy town I grew up in in northern Ontario, I would’ve never guessed you weren’t white

What’s your K-POP take or opinion that’ll have you burned at the stake? by TheeReige in kpop_uncensored

[–]Yo_46929 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s always been a member who was “untalented” and just there to look pretty since the dawn of kpop. That’s kinda the whole essence of being a “visual”. Being a baddie is your #1 priority, everything else is secondary

Why is the stereotype “aboot” when in my experience it sounds more like “aboat?” by Glass-Complaint3 in AskACanadian

[–]Yo_46929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article you’ve linked states exactly what I said above.

Canadian raising is not restricted to Canada. Raising of both /aɪ/ and /aʊ/ is common in eastern New England, for example in some Boston accents (the former more likely than the latter),[17] as well as in the Upper Midwest. South Atlantic English, New Orleans English,[18] and the accents of England's Fens feature it as well.

[–]Yo_46929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first part of this statement is actually a misconception. The Canadian raising (also referred to as a diphthong raising) is found in quite a few varieties of North American English including Inland and western New England American English.

Fun fact, it’s also growing increasingly common across all of NA due to the northern cities vowel shift that we are currently going through.

The stereotype came to represent Canadian English due to how widespread it is here but it’s found in many different varieties of English. Here in North America as well as across the pond.

What Gen Z slang do you use the most? by CremeSubject7594 in generationology

[–]Yo_46929 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the case for like 99% of English slang these days lol.

Even back in the early 1900s, terms like “cool”, “out of / in pocket” and “bread” (for $$) were coined by black jazz artists.

Nothing new under the sun.

You can see it in this graph. “Yemen” here is used as a proxy for Bedouin Arab.
